The way I learned it was by playing the riff without the tapping, then slowly incorporated it into my playing. To do that, do the same thing with your left hand as you would playing the riff normally, and then anytime you would pluck a note, instead tap that note 1 octave (12 frets) higher.
It's pretty fast, so try to practise using two fingers to tap it out, almost as though you were plucking the strings as you normally would.

Blew my mind when I first heard the chorus and figured out what he was doing, brings the song to a whole new level...
He's my favourite bassist, I listen to Mudvayn just so I can listen to his plaing, yet I really think most of Mudvayne's songs are terrible, hell of a Bass Player though...

This is actually the first Ryan Martinie thread I've stumbled across, yet isn't the first I've posted in where the topic changed to him...

As most of us know I'm sure,Warwick isn't as efficient when it comes to lows. Great bassist(would die to hear some of his Jazz work),good technique and overall style. If ya ask me,It's his basses he should change. Not downing Warwick,I love 'em,but for HIS style,he needs something else. Just my 2 cents. -Luke | Are you serious? Slapping itself is a real good way to lose a lot of low-end. Warwicks pump out more lows and low-mids than any bass I've heard and/or played (meaning anything on radio, jazz, rock, metal, fusion, funk, pop, rap, etc.)

Ryan is the man. I wish I could have complete control over the instrument like he does. You just watch him and can see every single extra tap or pop has it's right place in the song.
He doesn't overdo it or solo like he could, but just makes it fit just right in the song. Badass stuff. Most jazz guys couldn't hold a candle to his all-around technique and ability.

Sure he's a little bit flashy, and maybe not enough "low end" for some, but it's still his style. He plays bass from a "jazz influence/style" in a heavy band. I think it's cool. Sorry that he has to do some things a little bit differently to be heard with a heavy, distorted guitar sound. Not everyone plays with keys, percussion and horns like Jaco. |

That guys definitely has GREAT skills... One might not like Mudvayne's music (too violent for some people) but Ryan's playing is outstanding.
