I feel bad for the guy dying so young, but he looks like he's had a serious ongoing drug problem for decades. Plus he died of a heart attack, which is also a good indicator when you're 46.
It's a shame...it really is...dude played some wild bass, though. RIP. |

He was 46. Raven played bass for Ministry, Prong, Society 1, Killing Joke, Godflesh along with his new band Mob Research.
"Paul Raven was the most stand up guy I ever had the pleasure to work with" stated Society 1 frontman Matt Zane. "The thing about Raven is that after working together he made an effort in the following years to stay in touch even if it was just to drop you a quick message to let you know he was keeping an eye on you. That was the coolest thing about him. He respected you and made it a point to let you know that. With everything he has done with his career he didn't have to stay in contact or even admit his involvement with me and my band but that's what separated him in my eyes from all the other musicians I've had dealings with over the years. I have the greatest respect for him. A great musician and a great person. I will truly miss him." |

It's a shame...it really is...dude played some wild bass, though. RIP. | around the time the 2003 KJ album was being recorded Raven had a blog on the band website (although in the end he didn't play on that album)- and he mentioned his doctor warning him about the effects of his lifestyle, and often mentioned giving up drinking.
RIP. |

Stingray cutlass? looks (and sounds) like the same bass in Prong's "snap your fingers, snap your neck". |

I met Paul Raven at a gig (Roy Harper) in London once, 17 years ago. Despite the fact that he was on a "night off" with some of his (showbiz) buddies, he wasn't the least bit grumpy when I (a complete stranger) approached him at the bar for a friendly word or two .
At the time, KJ were just about to release their "Dirt and Extremeties" album and despite the fact that I was managing a record shop at that time, I didn't know anything about this . Raven was really enthusing about it and was so concerned that I got to hear it, that he took my name and address down and promised to get a promo copy of the CD sent to me, as soon as it was ready for release. I didn't ask him to, he just offered .
And that, as I've heard from other people who've met him too, was the kind of guy that Paul Raven was - a real down-to-earth guy with a wicked sense of humour, who liked a pint and a laugh and always had time for fans of his music, although he had a fearsome reputation with stroppy journalists .
Luckily, we have YouTube now, so he needn't be forgotten . Amusing Interview with Paul Raven and Jaz Coleman
R.I.P Paul.

He was such an integral part of Killing Joke's sound... and that band was/is as influential as anything in the punk/industrial/metal world. It's funny, because i'm certain ministry couldn't have made the transformation from fey pseudo-britpop to industrial metal had Killing Joke not been such a massive influence... and then he goes and joins Ministry after Paul Barker leaves. Truly came full circle.
Alas, nothing left to do but cherish everything the guy left us with which, thankfully, is a lot of stellar material!
(Not to disrespect anyone's memory, but has there been any word as to the future of Killing Joke?)
RIP Paul; sleep well brother.
