Saw Hot Tuna last night

At George Mason University in northern Virginia. I would guess the venue held about 3,000 and it looked sold out. They did an acoustic & electric set, and Jack Casady was terrific. His tone was thunderous on the electric set in particular. He's lost nothing to age.

I've seen them several times, but not recently. Jack has always impressed me, but Jorma is spellbinding.

Watching them together is pure pleasure. They are about as dialed into each other as any two musicians can be.

Not to mention the incompabable Charlie Musselwhite on harp! Been wearing out his new CD The Well and saw on his site this morning he's touring with Jorma and Jack as Hot Tuna Blues, with Jim Lauderdale in the band as well. Hoping they make it through Nashville.

Hot Tuna, and Jack, loom large in my background. I haven't seen them do an electric thing in quite a while, must see if they're coming my way this time.
I know what you mean about 'dialed in', those two together are like Swiss watch.

Interestingly, it seemed that G.E. Smith handled more of the guitar solos than Jorma. I did not do a scientific study or anything, but it felt that way to me.

Saw them in '09. Absolutely astounding.
I will say though, that it seemed to me Jorma has, not lost steam per se, but mellowed out a bit. Jack seemed unchanged. Regardless both put on an unparalleled performance.

Mellowed out - that is a good way of putting it. Jorma's sound was fuller and less biting than in the past.

Hot Tuna

I saw Hot Tuna 2 weeks ago in New Jersey and I got to meet Jack Casady before the show. He is a gentleman; a very nice man!
I first saw them in 1971 when Jack played Alembic #0001; the first Alembic bass. They were very loud then. I think they still both kick major ass when playing. Sure, they have mellowed. Jorma is 70 and Jack 68. They are like rock and roll gods to me.

Hot Tuna

PS - Jack Casady pretty much danced around a bit while he played. The man has incredible chops! Incredible! I have been playing bass for 44 years . I have seen a few bass players; from McCartney, John Entwhistle, Jaco, Jack Bruce... and Jack Casady is up with the best of em.

Did they play "The Water Song"? What a piece of music!

Unfortunately no. I would have liked to have heard it, but they were playing more of their newer materia. Casady was using an interesting custom tube head for the acoustic set. Made by "Delassandro", I think. I was not close enough to see it that well. I should have asked the sound man- our seats were right next to the board. I took my daughter to the show - she is 22 and was one of the youngest people there.

I saw them about three weeks ago. They really kicked it. They sold out an entire theater, on a Wednesday night, in lousy weather.
