Saw Pino last night!

PSP (Pino Palladino, Simon Phillips, and Phillipe Saisse) played last night at the Wesfest benefit, at the Roxy in LA. Awesome show!

I was standing about 8 feet in front of Pino. He played a Fretted Fender Jaguar with flats, and his fretless Stingray through an Ashdown head and two Ashdown 410s. Incredible control over intonation and dynamics by Pino, and really the whole group. He would seamlessly switch the octave divider on an off in the middle of phrases, very smooth. I do wish his tone was a bit more distinct and bright, but all around a great show!

EDIT: Some crappy phone pics:

Cool. For you Pino fans, I believe Pino is playing bass on the upcoming Robbie Roberston CD (or whatever the heck you call an album release now!). That should be way cool!

Lucky! I've seen Pino with The Who a number of times. And you said the right word. "Smooth". Entwistle, although one of my top 5 bass players, was always very rough and full of attack. It was his style, and he was the BEST at it. But Pino has got a smoothness to everything he plays, and it dosent compromise the integrity of The Who's sound. He truly knows his instrument and his craft.

Also, every time I've seen him he's had that great Jag with the matching headstock. Never saw him with the fretless, but did he have his Pino P-Bass sitting on the sidelines? It seems that he never plays it, but always has it ready to go. Almost like a product placement. Haha.

Ashdown? I though he was playing Phil Jones with PSP (at least live anyway, there's a picture of an SVT in the latest PSP studio pics) maybe he was hiring and they didn't have PJB.

Awesome pictures. Now I'm just flat out jealous.

Ezbass - I've never seen him with a Phil Jones, only Ashdown and SVT's. But I'm interested in seeing some pics with him and a PJ. He probably dominates through one of those stacks.

Quick question. Does he still play Laklands? I know he records with his Decade sometimes, but has been using them live at all?

He's good friends with Phil Jones (I think they grew up together). He was using that PJ rig on the sub gigs he did for Tal Wilkenfeld with Herbie Hancock last year.

And yes, he is VERY tall (I think 6'7" or something like that).

Jealous! I really hope I can see Pino play in person one day. He's one of my bass heroes. Such a great player.

I don't care what most people think about the PJ stuff, that head and those cabs sound REAL good IMO.

He was touring with the largest neo cab (something like 21 drivers or something like that!) and that head. I couldn't hear any stage sound (I was at Chene Park to hear them), but my guess is that sounds pretty good!

Oh yes, other bassists of note who played last night: Bryan Beller and Pete Griffin (Gryphon Labs, Zappa Plays Zappa). Smokin!

I remember reading somewhere that Pino is 6'4.

To the OP... what did you think of the drumming? Simon Phillips is ungodly good.

I had a chance to see PSP a week or so ago but had to bag it - I deeply regret it! (fwiw he used a PJ amp on that show . . .)

Simon Phillips was awesome, and he had a wonderful playfulness to his playing. Both he and Pino played polymeter games with each other, and it was always 100% musical. Both Simon and Pino have incredible dynamic control, and they were able to take the dynamics from crushingly loud to so soft that I could hear conversation at the bar, and the energy was still there at all levels.

I got the idea that these three just really have fun playing together, there was a lot of smiling at inside jokes and mistakes etc. Yes, Pino is human and swallowed a couple of notes (not the wrong note, just didn't fret it completely).

As I said, Pino played Ashdown, but I don't think it was his rig, I think it belonged to Pete Griffin and all the bassists used it. Bryan Beller actually blew the head and they replaced it with a different Ashdown (sorry I don't know Ashdown's models).

And yes, Pino is very tall (6'4" sounds right), and Simon is quite short, so it was funny to see them standing next to each other.

So this year's winner of the Berklee Wes scholarship (Joshua Tyson) played an interesting Fender, it was a 5-string with what looked like two musicman humbuckers. It sounded very good, very nice in a driving modern gospel style.

Anybody know what that bass is? Here's a pic:
