Saw The Police at Fenway last night

I had the pleasure of seeing The Police at historic Fenway park last night, and boy was it a good show. I am mystified by Mr. Sting's playing. He uses pretty much a normal two finger technique, but instead of Index Middle, he does Thumb Index. I tried playing like this, and I just can't get as good a sound out of it as he does. It always seems quieter when I do it. Anyways, they were great, and Stewart was a beast on the drum set. I really suggest catching the reunion tour if it comes near you.

On a side note, being at Fenway, I couldn't help but notice that The Red Sox won on the road, too bad Tampa Bay.

Sting is a great player. When he is singing he often employs thumb, index, and middle finger much like an acoustic guitar player when finger picking. When doing this he mounts the little finger edge of his hand near the south end of the bridge. Maybe it simplifies things for him so he can concentrate on his voice.

When he is not singing he uses a normal two finger hammerstroke with a floating thumb. Occasionally he thumbs and will use the odd slapping motion from time to time.

It was killin' right? I'm seeing them on Halloween and looking forward to it. He didn't use a pick when he played? I'm not a pick fan but he makes sound great.

Different strokes (literally) for different folks. Lots of players - including some pros - use idiosyncratic techniques that aren't generally recommended. Doesn't mean those techniques are necessarily "wrong" just because they're non-standard. And it doesn't mean they're necessarily "right" just because a pro happens to use such a technique.

In some cases, using a very non-standard technique can give a particular player a very distinctive, "signature" sound that becomes his trademark. And in some cases, using such a technique actually handicaps his growth as a musician, but since he's become comfortable playing the way he does, he simply works around it - despite whatever limitations it may impose...

He used to play a pick back when they were around originally, and I think that's the sound on all the records, but he uses the weird thumb now.

Saw them tonight at Giants Stadium. Great show. Mix was great. Band was tight. Tunes were great. Sting's voice was like a cannon; totally on pitch, and strong as an ox. Excellent showing by one of rock's great bands. Let's hope something continues after this tour.
