Saw Sleep last night

Al's bass tone and playing was crushing. He really is an amazing player. Loud, too. I'm glad I had ear plugs. Otherwise I don't think I'd be able to hear anything for the next week.

For those interested in equipment, he was as always, playing a Rickenbacker (fireglo, with a jetglo or blue backup... I wonder what happened to that sparkly green one from back in the day?). For amplification he was using a Marshall fullstack and two SVTs with fridges.

The opener, Thrones, was very interesting. Joe Preston, who has played with Earth, the Melvins, High on Fire, Sunn O))) and a bunch of other bands, was just up on stage by himself with his bass, a huge array of effects, and a looper.

Mic'ed, from the looks of things. Both SVT's were on, one 810 was mic'ed, and one of the Marshall 412's was as well. Lots of the sound seemed to be coming from the backline, at least up front. Doom.

Saw them last week in Brooklyn. It was the loudest concert I'd been to, until Boris/Sunn O))) took that title the next night at the same venue (and before Sleep, Boris was the loudest). Total earth crushing bass 2 nights in a row. Both concerts were amazing.

Oh......

This is when being old and out of touch really hurts.

They played in Chicago 4 days ago....

I had no clue.

Excuse me... I'm going to go and stab myself in the face for a while.

I'd love to go to such a concert one of these days. Sleep is a great band, and seeing Boris or Sunn O))) live would be fantastic as well! Although I'd be deaf for about a week, but it'd certainly be worth it!

Wish they'd come up here to Canada!

Though I am seeing High on Fire and Torche next month, but still, Sleep....

We're going to have to merge all these threads at some point...

Anyway, I saw 'em in Philadelphia. Louder than Boris, louder than HOF, and (maybe) louder than OM, but I'm pretty sure we got a bigger backline than the rest of the tour.

I also saw this show; it was incredible.

Thrones totally blew my mind. Preston has a tone like the roar of a bear.

I saw Primus last night. So it's been a very bassy few days.

Speaking of Thrones, seeing him on my birthday! Also, Joe was at the Boris/Sunn concert (no bass, just doing crazy vocal effects and stuff)

Next you have to see Rush. That would complete things.
