So I saw them last night at the Avalon. Yeah, I know, I know, Wolfmother, blah blah blah, but anyway, besides their actual performance (which was mediocre) I finally got to fully appreciate in an intimate club setting the classic P Bass through an overdriven Ampeg SVT and Fridge (or in this case, two). I know what a P Bass sounds like, of course, but I really got a taste of one at high volumes and what people mean when they say "hollow grind." I can now appreciate why it's the classic tone of rock. I am also now further convinced that it's not "my tone." I like it in its place, but I prefer the P Bass bottom but without that hollowness--a full, balanced, tight, punchy tone.
Just thought I'd share....

Wolfmother should stop ripping off the MC5 and Zeppelin and move up to ripping off Gang Of Four and XTC like all the other bands (KIllers, Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol, et al)

And I don't like that, it's like a substitute for kids who don't know the classics. |

Patton proved what an ass he was in that interview. He bashed "retro rock" where as he was in the process of telling the person conducting the interview that he was making an album of 50s Italian music.
I think Wolfmother is OK, they've got a few good tunes.

What's really NEW anymore?
It's certainly more NEW than the rappers who simply recycle every old funk or rock tune they can get their hands on that hasn't already been run into the ground via samples.
The P-bass not being "your tone" I can respect. There was a time, when I owned maybe 2-3 basses, that I could say I had a "tone". Now, I must own nearly 30 basses, and I love ALL of their tones...because they're ALL different, and I can use them for different things. I tend to cover a lot of ground, musically speaking, as I write everything from funk, to pop, to rock, to jazz.
Funny thing is, when you pick up that P-bass, and start playing along to all of that wonderful music you've heard all of your life, and THAT SOUND comes out, suddenly you GET IT.
Of course, YMMV, but that's how it was for me.
My favorite two basses? My serial #950 original Tobias Signature 6...and the ubiquitous P-bass. Opposite ends of the galaxy, as basses go...and yet, each wonderful in its own way.

They have never talked about their influences, because they do not have to...
Great stuff... |

| | | I have heard their music a little and I think it's OK. Sometimes even good. Joker and the thief is great.
Why bash them? Now that Mike Patton has said something **** about them in one interview, everyone thinks it's some kind of instant truth (I don't literally mean _everyone_)
Out there's pretty many ****** bands ripping of some other ****** band, but that's not a problem? You rarely find something new and original nowdays anyway. |

I have never been one to like anything that came out AFTER I was born (1988). Some newer bands are decent, I am not saying it all sucks. I just think that Wolfmother was a great change from, say, Blink 182, Sum 41, and all that garbage. Who cares if they sound like an old band.. thats the idea isnt it? To try to modernize older rock/metal. Kids will think, "Oh, I really like this band..", and then realize that the music their fathers listen to is actually the same kind of music. Soon as you know it, the good old rock/metal will be back in the mainstream. At least this is my hope. |

I was at that Avalon concert. Maybe you saw me, I was the kid crowdsurfing at the begining of White Unicorn 8-P
That concert kicked so much ass. |

Nice to see people thinking for themselves.
The guys in Wolthmother never intented to be this big, they were just playing music very much like what they enjoyed. So the music industry tagged on and made it the next big thing, so what? I bet the boys are enjoying it.

For the record, I had an open mind about Wolfmother before I saw them live here in Adelaide (South Australia) - my brother took me for my birthday. We had seats (tiring week, ok? ) and I was asleep half-way through their show! It took all of my bluster to mumble a 'thanks for taking me' at the end of the night. |

Anybody who is a Warwick and/or effects pedal enthusiast owes it to themselves to check out Cog, an awesome three-piece from Sydney.

| Sure, but is it Wolfmother's fault? And for real, if they are _that_ awesome they should get their share of spotlight sooner or later.
I think they introduce old bands like zep and sabbath to kids who weren't alive to hear them previously. I see no problem in any of this.
And I'm not a Wolfmother fan, but this is just what I think. Quote: |
