Scott Spray, Whoa! (Johnny Winter Band)

I am surprised there are no posts about Scott Spray here at TB as the dude flat out rocks. He plays a beat up Yamaha BB3005 (pictured here http://www.scottspray.com/news.html) with P & J pickups. Maybe I have been to too many Jazz concerts in recent years and ignoring Rockin' Blues but WOW. He traded licks with Johnny, no easy task, played chords and all the while holding down the bottom end. At times I heard the sounds of Jack Bruce from the days of Cream. He gave new meaning to the phrase "the balls of the band."

Scott has an unorthodox style. At times he only plays with his thumb like while playing walking lines. He switches to standard finger style at times and also uses his thumb and forefinger to play chords. His relaxed manner lets you know he has no doubt about what's next.

If Johnny's current tour goes through you town catch the show and let me know what you think of Scott's playing.

David

Scott's a friend and a former teacher of mine. He's not so well known because he spent so much time in his career in the studios. He's got unbelievable ears and time, and a sound to die for. And he's a cool guy too. He's been playing clubs in CT/NY/NJ for years and hearing him up close is amazing. He's had that Yamaha since at least '87 when I started taking lessons with him. Become one his friends on myspace, I know he's glad that people are listening.
Peace.
