Sean Hurley - JM in NYC Beacon Theater

Sign in to disble this ad
Watched JM at the Beacon Theater on the tube tonight . . . thought the show was awesome - Sean kicked ass! Big fan of his stuff w/ Vertical Horizon.

Thought I would miss De La (and do) but the bass tones and performance was killer...

I thought the tone was great. I played to almost the whole show while watching with an Ampeg B100R/Avalon U5 that I have in my room with a '71 P and had a lot of fun.

I was hoping to see Pino play with the band, but all in all it was still great.

Steve Jordan played last night . . . I'm sure the JMT will be around for years.

Steve Jordan has been the touring drummer and studio drummer for John for quite some time.

Jordan does not usually play with Mayer live, outside the JMT.
He old tour band drummer was JJ Johnson.
Maybe it was because they were in NY. (Jordan's home town)
Was hoping to see Pino last night?
Sean Hurley sounded good though.

Hurley's doing an excellent job with JM, but DeLa is definitely missed.

I mentioned this in another thread last night, but I'll ask again:

What's with the switch from the Gibson and Divided By 13 rig to the Fender and SVT last night? Was he channeling DeLa and Pino? Did Mayer tell him to dump the boutique stuff and go with the industry standard? It just seems odd to me.

maybe - also might be I think VH had a thing going with /13 (although I can't imagine who would turn down having JM's bass player endorse their product.)

but even the basses, I've seen him a lot w/ J style and lately w/ an epi - I think it was just the sound he/JM was going for...

Looked like he had a Lakland (Glaub?) standing by also- but the only thing I remember seeing him play besides his P bass was a Mustang

Was that a Mustang? I thought it was a Jaguar at first, but it had a blank headstock. Very cool, whatever it was.

FYI, my wife is a huge Mayer fan. While she drools over him, I ogle the bass gear. :-)

Ha! me too - and since I'm also a guitar player, there is a lot of drooling going on!

LOL

Digging the Two Rock, eh?

Yeah, there's some seriously beautiful tube amp action on his stage.

We were in the front row at one of the shows on the Mayercraft cruise earlier this year. Mayer was two feet away from her and she was in ecstacy while I was trying to figure out the wacky effects unit that Robbie McIntosh was using. It looked like a blackface Fender Bassman, but it was some sort of tube sustainer.

It's a win-win! She gets to stalk JM and I get to see some really good shows! Looking forward to 12/29 at Copley Hall in San Diego. Trio!

Sean Hurley Facts:

Playing a '60 P-bass w/LaBella Flats for most of the Mayer show
Playing a Lakland Bob Glaub w/rounds on a couple songs (for grittier tone)
Playing a 60s Mustang on Crossroads-Mayer played the bass himself in the studio-Not Pino-for this one track on Battle Studies.
Playing a Kay hollowbody reissue for Who Says
Not using the 70s Gibson hollowbody (like an Epi Jack Casady) this tour
Using 2 (1 for backup) Vintage SVTs w/8x10

Just FYI Sean has become for first-call session player in L.A. for many top producers (like Glen Ballard!) over the last 5+ years or more.

IMO, Sean's playing is more like Pino's than DeLa's...maybe that's why he's got the gig now...??

ONE of my FAVE bassists working today for sure.

I could have sworn I saw a picture of Hurley's pedal board somewhere, but can not find it anymore. Anyone have any idea what he uses?

Mojo-you're totally right. my mistake, it must be some televised live gigs i've seen had Jordan.
