| | | | He has hung out around here a couple of times in the past, but he's busy as crazy from what I know. Yes though, if anyone knows more about music theory than what material actually exists on the topic, it's him. He's been knocked for being a Jaco, Willis, or Berlin clone, but I've always thought he has his own style, and he's the guy who inspired me to pick up a fretless. |

| | | | I believe he actually teaches at the University of Oregon. I've been tempted to enroll for the longest time...
Simply fantastic bassist. He, Tyr, Tony Choy and Steve DiGiorgio really lead the pack as far as metal bass playing is concerned. |

However, I can't stand SA as a band, which is a shame becuase I just love the sound of Kubicki basses! However, Sean is a monster player. He's got some cool stuff going on, thats for sure. |

| | | Public service announcement, Lars Norberg used a fretted bass on the Spiral Architect album, and only recently has started playing a fretless. It's all over the internet, folks. |

| | | | Checked out those videos, and really liked them both. What is this Gordian Knot you're talking about? Is it a band or an album?

Originally Posted by Lars K. Norberg There has been some confusion about the bass, whether I use fretless on the album or not. To end the confusion – I use a Steinberger Q4 on that record all the way through, and it’s definitely fretted. This is the story: That bass has actually a very ‘hard’ sound to it. That’s great for certain things, but can also be limiting. Anyway – in order to create more variations to my lines, I started to experiment with different approaches to simulate fretless bass. My goal at the time was to create a ‘hybrid style’, thus getting the best from both worlds. I used no effects in order to “accomplish” the illusion of a fretless bass. Basically I just tried to play more legato. For instance, one thing I did was to play a lot of parallel octaves in order both to get that richer ‘fretless-sounding’ sound and the desired glissando feel: Listen to the first half of Moving Spirit for extended use of this ‘technique’. It’s reminiscent to using an octaver.
Since then I’ve bought myself a fretless bass, a Gary Willis signature. I use that one in the new project with Steinar. I also have the fretted version of the same bass. As of now I’m not sure which bass I’ll use on the new SA. Perhaps a combination? Time will show. |
Any questions?
BTW, any questions for Sean, he can probably answer them at his website, http://www.seanmalone.net. I hear he's pretty good about answering emails and is a very personable guy to talk to.
