Seen Any Upside Down Players ?

Sign in to disble this ad
I saw a Beatles tribute band last night - "4 Guys from Liverpool" with players who also play in The Fab Four and Rain. Quite a good show.

I found it very interesting that when "Paul" was playing keyboards, "John" or "George" played his lefty bass righty, just flipping it upside down. I was impressed that they learned to do this instead of just having a second bass on the stand.

Anyone else do this?

It's how Dick Dale's guitars are setup when he plays. I'm pretty sure that that's why Paul chose the violin bass, because it transitioned to left easier than basses with uneven horns.

I seem to remember Steve Mlller's right handed bassist doing this as matter of habit, playing his left handed P-bass upside down.

Jimi Goodwin from Doves is lefty and plays a right handed Precision Bass. Looks pretty weird to me.

Keith Horne used to play in bars around here...was quite a sight seeing this (especially the slap/pop stuff).

Jimmy Haslip is another bassist that plays "upsidedown". I've seen him a couple times...but not upfront & close like I did with Horne.

Once upon a time, I played with a guitarist that played "upsidedown"...no way could you cheat by looking at his fretting hand. Even a basic open "C" chord looked painful.

Jimmy Haslip of Yellowjackets fame does, not sure if someone already mentioned him. He plays with the highest strings at the top and lowest strings at the bottom of the bass, (reverse order of normal tuning).

Victor Wooten and Quinten Berry at Winter Namm 2011

Check out how Quinten Berry plays, reaching up from below. Not exactly the same thing, but upsidedown none-the-less.

Plenty of lefties that learned to play on a right handed instrument by just flipping it over play this way.

Most eventually get a lefthanded instrument for the balance of the upper horn (Haslip is a good example) but still string it "upside down".

Jeff Schmidt's another guy that plays that way. I bet if he learned to string his bass right he'd be pretty good . . .

Quentin Berry is another guy that used to play in bar bands around here.
The 1st time I saw him, I thought he was just goofing around & was bored...they were playing a tune by Sponge. The next tune was "What Would You Say" by the DMB. He still played the same way...not an easy tune.
He saves some $ by not needing a strap.

paul himself used to do this on guitar, since right handed guitars were always around and lefties were not.

I was in the Army with a guy who is one hell of a bassist. I had never seen him play before but heard he was really good. One day he asked me if I wanted to see his new 8 string bass and of course I said yes. He brought the bass to work the next day and handed it to me. I started fiddling around with it (I'm a righty BTW) admiring it's looks and playability. While I was doing so I was showing him a video of Victor Wooten on youtube. Long story short, when I handed him his bass he took the bass, flipped it and starting pounding out what we were watching like it was nothing! Blew my mind. I almost quit playing that day. Being self-taught he didn't know the correct string order until he joined his first band. Apparently he blew their minds too.
