Sharay Reed is an absolutely ridiculous groove master! His fills are insane, too!

Damn! Love that style of music .

Ton of talent in those 4 gents, wish the percussion was louder in the mix.

That is one of my favorite clips. It is also a big bag of shut up for anyone who is Anti-Fender. That dude is rockin' either a MIM Deluxe or an older MIA Deluxe Jazz V, and he sounds as good as anyone I ever heard on a $3,000+ boutique.

Looks like an old USA deluxe. Great basses if you can find a good one

Never heard of him before this. What a beautiful player. Great J Bass tone, and IMO great feel, even playing quite a bit. I dug it a LOT!

wow... he definately is a phenominal player.. his groove is there, but he still is playing agressive jaco-esque runs and fills that never sound too busy, but all the while are quite busy.. very melodic.. im impressed.. hopefully ill see/hear more of this guy.

I that Sharay Reed's tone has much more grind and definitely more of a smiley face eq than the classic Jaco back bridge burp. In the church clip, he is definitely in the spirit, and is digging in to get that grit. The GC performace was mellower in its tone and approach.

I would love to get some CDs of Mr. Reed's playing.

That guy's got his own voice. Very nimble and easy in the pocket. Nice playing!

I LOOK AT HIS YOUTUBE VIDEOS EVERYDAY. THIS CAT IS A BEAST & TASTEFUL. HIS PLAYING ON THE "THANK YOU" VID HAS A STEVIE WONDER FEEL TO IT. CHECK OUT HIS SOLO GOSPEL CD.

Interestingly, that clip of him playing in church with the Warwick amp is a great example of why many of us don't dig active Fender 5 strings (assuming that is what he's playing). He's killing on it, but that tone has very little to do with the classic Fender passive single coil tone that many (and even most) of us love. That sounds just like the one's I've played... very active, more 'hum cancelling' than single coil tone. Not that it sounds bad, but it surely doesn't sound like a classic Fender tone in 5 string format.

Sorry for the OT, but just reacting to your post above. VERY few people dog the classic Fender passive tone, only the very strange decisions they made (at least up to very recently) regarding their 5 string instruments.

Back to the groove love.... GREAT playing. I love all the emotion and intensity in that church clip. Wonderful!!! That's how I try to play!

what jazz bass with hum cancelling pickups sounds like a fender though in the first place?

i hear ya on the playing though. my own goals are to groove like the gospel/r&b guys and blow like the jazz geeks. it took me a while to figure out that squirrly on top of the beat playing probably wasnt the best idea in the world in every genre of music

IMHO thats THE clasic gospel tone. Very active sounding, sits well in the mix with the organs and keys and choir Big bottom, big groove kind of agressive sounding. You need that when you are playing that type of music IMHO. The classic passive Fender tone doesn't work as well in that situation. Great stuff I wish there were more videos of him out there.

I agree 100%. That's a different point. My point was that really isn't the classic Fender tone that Dr. Cheeze mentioned in his post.

Sorry for the OT. I've been trying to get Anthony (Dr. Cheeze) to stop buying and selling all those cheapo's every two months and buy a real bass
