anyone into these bands ?
the bass sound of these three bands is just cheer brilliance, everything cuts through so you hear exactly what the bassist is doing instead of it being burried somewhere in the mix.
tool, or, let's say, chancellor adepts that haven't heard about these bands yet.. give them a listen, you won't be disapointed.
more recent bands with a similar bass sound are erase errata, zebulon pike and..yeah.. i admit, i like them, the gossip...weird, but the bass sound is neat.
to those of you that do know about shellac, or the others, tho shellac still stays my fav; do you happen to know about their bass player's setup ?
just for inspiration, not copycat -ation.
or other bands i don't know about with a similar 'present' bass sound ?
share yr knowledge plz.
my current bass sound is just very bright/clear (fresh strings), heavy plectrum use (works better for the band i currently play in..kind of post rock/metal), precision bass (MIA), i recently got a sansamp pbddi and it's never off (my top is an ashdown mag300, cab is an ampeg svt410he) so there's a huge difference in sound when it's turned on. |

if you havent already check out the minutemen, you could probably say some of nomeansno's sound was inspired by the minutemen.

Incidentally, check out The Hanson Bros.... it's the three guys from Nomeanso with John Wright singing and another drummer. Very fun

thanks for the other tips, i'll check them out, heard things about the minutemen but never really took the time to really check them out
steve from ZP is very talented, i sent him a message on myspace once, very friendly guy, informative replies, but ZB is just a fantastic band, they sound massive. |

Steve Albini makes fantastic recordings at his Chicago studio, Electrical Audio. I think he's the best there is at making every instrument sound as good as it possibly can on a recording and if I had to pick one person to record my own music it would be Steve Albini. I can't stand his band Shellac. To my ears, it's the most annoying pile of noise that seems to have no point other than to make annoying sounds. They've just released a new album and their dedicated fans are overjoyed after such a long wait since their last album. |

I really like Shellac but I can understand how people coming from a classic rock background won't enjoy them. To me they're a great power-trio with one of the best drummers in rock music.

one of my favorite shows of all time was seeing shellac open for fugazi in chicago, late 90s some time. albini's a weirdo but he understands music. i've never been too big on big black, but shellac is always interesting.
there was a time in college when i couldn't go anywhere without hearing spiderland... great album to be sure.

over here (belgium) there definitely is a post-rock scene and it's growing, the past few months i've seen isis, pelican, these arms are snakes, slint ànd shellac in just two/three months time too.. so that does say something about the current post rock scene over here too..people are hungry for some more technically challenging rock.. and bands over here pick up on that stuff..something i'm very pleased about... the retro rock wave we went through still ain't over, and it's quite alright..but boring after some time.
anyway, these bands aren't just another 90's thing, some of them are working on new material.. woo !
about those travis bean guitars/basses... they're quite exspensive eh ?
but i can i'magine the 'clang' you hear in the bass sound of shellac does have something to do with the non wood necks..i guess..
albini sure is a weirdo.. but he's a genious when it comes to music.. he knows what he's doing, you hear that on all the records he's worked on. |

I forget off the top of my head which marshall head he uses, but it blows me away because its a "modestly" powered solid-state head. The thing is freakin' loud! Uses a Marshall cab as well. I swear by this band like no other, as they have been playing since the late 70's and have been doing it their way ever since. Every record a sheer treat.
Being from MPLS, I still have not gotten the chance to see Zebulon Pike, although, another prominent band from MPLS with a SICK bassist is Self-Evident. check them out here.
Shellac and Slint are pinocle (sp?) for me as well. Tweez is my favorite album by Slint, and Shellac has that spot thats just....well...if you listen to Shellac you know what I'm talkin about. |

Are you from Minneapolis?
Trevor Dunn is a sick bassist. I couldn't stop listening to California until I accidentally put in "SMILE". But most Patton projects are right up there for me. Dysrhythmia is real good, but I can only listen to them for so long. Same thing goes for bands like Don Caballero, Sleepy Time Gorrila Museum, and Cheer-Accident. |
