Should I buy Marcus Millers album "Marcus"?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have heard many things about Marcus Miller, but I have never really sat down and listened to him. So I bought some Microsoft points and want to know if I should buy his cd "Marcus". I would really like to get into his music, as Im sure he is a great player and influence.
If you think I should please tell me as to why.
Thank You.

This is the way to go if you are only going to buy one 'CD'. The Ozell tapes cover most of Marcus' material, and will give you a wonderfully 'live' sounding mix.

Check out Marcus' facebook fan page, there's a video on there of the song "Blast", which is my favorite song off of the Marcus album, watch the video, maybe you'll like it enough to buy the album
But I agree, The Ozell Tapes are a good introduction if you're used to listening to live music.

Mt first serious listen to Marcus was Silver Rain. Since then I have gone through his other work. The others mentioned here are spot on. You will not go wrong with any of them.

No, I do not think you should buy any Marcus Miller albums.

Buying isn't very punk rock at all.

I think you should steal them.

Wear a studded leather jacket and yell something about anarchy while you do it.

<dons Nomex flame retardent suit> buy one Marcus Miller disc and you pretty much bought them all............
He is who he is. Sounds pretty much the same on all his solo stuff.
Besides song content, bass playing-wise, it's the same. Nothing new from disc to disc IMO.

That being said, I own all his solo stuff!
Like the songs.
Like his playing too, but heard pretty much everything on one disc.

Marcus is such a great and influential player, you really need to listen to some of his stuff if you're at all serious about studying the electric bass. Check out "The Sun Don't Lie" and "Tales", both from the early or mid 1990s. I like both of those.

With that said, MikeBass does have a point; unless you really become a fan I'm not sure you need to own more than one or two discs. I kind of feel the same about all the great players: you don't have to like their playing, but you should at least give them a listen, if nothing else just to get a better idea of what you do and don't like.

Not a bad album but honestly, I'm not the biggest fan of "bass" albums, as in from the first note to the last note you know that this is a bassists album and "Marcus" is the epitome of this. I'm not the biggest Marcus fan in the first place but I far and away prefer when an album doesn't scream "I PLAY THIS INSTRUMENT!!". Not a bad album overall though. The covers of Free (w/ Corinne Bailey Rae) and Lost Without You are great but everything is kind of typical Marcus so if you dig his playing usually you'll like the rest of it, if not just buy those two songs, lol.
