Shredding Bassists

Is there any bassist that solos and plays blisteringly fast and is also musical? cause I'd like to study them...

Billy Sheehan and Cliff Burton could be some examples...

John Myung can shred ....Jeff Berlin isn't a "shredder" but you could definately learn speed from watching him as well.

Stephan Fimmers from Necrophagist...HOLY CRAP!!! His intro to "Only Ash Remains" is the epitome of bass shredding!

Also, check out Steve DiGiorgio's work with Death and, more recently, Dragonlord. Tony Choy's work with Cynic and Atheist too...shred city......you also can't go wrong with old greats like Chris Squire and John Entwistle (check him out live...holy crap!!).

Cliff is good. Sheehan is good. Myung is good. I think Dave Ellefson shreds pretty damn well!!! I wouldn't call Steve Harris a "shredder" per se, but I love him.

Juan Alderete when he was in Racer X. Especially the song "Scarified"(I always thought he used a pick in this song until i saw his video). His 2 finger speed is ridiculously fast. Unfortunetly He tends to get drowned out the mix by Paul and the rest of the band.

You could also try Brian Bromberg's CD "Metal". It's not really shred, but it is metal with multiple tracks of bass and drums. He uses a piccolo bass to achieve the "guitar-like" sound.

Also have to mention his work with The Mars Volta. He doesn't shred, but he palys some super fast fills and has some shred-esque solo's on the latest cd (Fraces the Mute). Also check out the Live at Electric Ballroom DVD/VHS, towards the end he has a ****ing sweet solo, and he gets really fast.

i'm only familiar with his stuff with megadeth and I really can't say that I argee. Is there something else I should check out?

Maybe shredding isn't the word...he plays pretty damn fast...Mechanix and Peace Sells are two tracks that come to mind for me. Feel free to tell me I'm nuts and/or dumb.

I consider Billy Sheehan the best known bass shredder ever. I would consider Victor Wooten a "slap-shred" specialist, too

Tho not in the sheehan "i play pagannini's caprices in my sleep" vein, these guys can throw some real fast fills/solos, so they appear as shredders in my book.

I love that band and in particular that intro/solo

Ive learnt abit of it learning the rest will take me a while.

Jari Kainulainen, the previous bass player of the Finnish power metal band Stratovarius is a real world class shredder. He plays rather subtly on the records but whenever you see him live he´s just all over the fretboard. If you ever happen to bump into Stratovarius´ CD´s, there´s some amazing bass playing on their live album Vision of Europe and from their studio albums I would recommend to take a look at Elements pt. I for some crazy bass runs - it´s not their best album but basswise one of the most interesting. Also the limited edition of their album Elements pt. II had some interesting live tracks on the bonus CD, especially the song "Father Time" comes to my mind. It´s a fast song (live aroung 190bpm porbably) the bass part of which is just straight 16th notes half the time and it gets really interesting since you can hear that even the drummer has little problems keeping up with the tempo but Kainulainen just goes mad does some insane fills at few places.

Btw. also the new bass player for Stratovarius, Lauri Porra, can really shred if he wants to but I don´t know whether does it or not with Stratovarius, I haven´t seen the new line-up live yet. Probably to some extent but I guess I´ll have to wait for their live DVD.
