I am a fan of the Sex Pistols music and Johnny Rotten/John Lydon in particular, BTW.

| | | Steve Jones, used to do a radio show here called Jonesy's Jukebox on 103.1 but sadly the station went under. You could tell he was the brains behind the guitars in the Pistols but he was to humble to talk about it.
Although, I missed many shows so maybe he did. |

I believe he could play , just not great ...at all. I know he was high alot but i think he could play simple root note stuff he may or may not be on recordings but i know he could"play" and i will argue that point forever.
To me you can play if you can play a 3 chord bass line. |

He was fired soon after for allegedly having Beatle records in his music collection.
It was all part of the ongoing publicity saga the Pistols were about to keep making news.
Sid brought them barrels of ink and tons of newsprint.
(that's pre-internet speak for: "tons of press coverage")
Sid was in Siouxse & the Banshees...for a minute.

Sid played on 'Bodies' but they faded his bass right down and played another bass track over the top. Sid was sick in hospital for most of the recording which gave them a good excuse to use other musicians to play his part.
i believe that he could play bass.. but not well, that been said you dont really need much experience to play the sex pistols entire catalogue. there is a recount i saw somewhere where jonny says that sid could have played bass if he wanted, and that he actually had some talent, he stayed up one night with a P bass and a Ramones record and when they all woke up he could play, he just never put any effort into getting good.
i love the Sex Pistols, and Sid, even if he couldn't play

He could play the root note three chord punk stuff when he wasn't too wasted but sometimes he was so far gone they had to turn him down because he couldn't keep up or would make so many mistakes that he was clashing with everyone.
I imagine you could compare him to someone like Mark Hoppus or that guy in Sum-41 in the skill department when he was sober but since most of the time he was wacked out on something his playing skill was more comparable to an ape with a bass strapped to him.

| | | | I've heard a few times that he'd actually managed to achieve a certain level of proficiency shortly before his death. The whole saga is really painfully tragic. I like some SP material. Analogous to Sid, SP definitely has a time and place to be appreciated. |

They were rebeling against all the "artiness" and percieved pretension that a lot of rock and rock stars were leaning towards and wanted that early sound (think The Groupies-Primitive). I don't think Sid would have played the bass well if he'd known how to.
