I'll probably get some disagreement here, but

Starlight-Muse

Simple bassline that defines the song.

Listen to motown, funk, R&B - 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's.
Many of the songs only had rhythm guitar. The bass line carried the songs.

Man, the Doobie Brothers always had some sweet bass going on.

More songs, Hysteria by Muse, or Hyper Musik by Muse.

Same Ol Road by Dredg, Triangle by Dredg.

Well I read through all the suggestions and unless it sneaked by me I can't believe that THE simplest bass line that also drives the song and sounds cool hasn't been mentioned. It is...

On the Waterfront - Simple Minds

Can you get any simpler than 1 note?
