Thin Lizzy - Waiting for an Alibi. If the first few notes were played on a guitar the song just wouldn't be the same. For me anyway.

The first line I ever played while singing the lead vocal. There's a reason it's so easy!

some people here suggested Motown and Stax numbers or stuff like Brown Eyed Girl, while these may seem simple I doubt a young player can really nail down the feel of these.
I'd go with stuff like that:
Queen - Crazy little thing called love
Chic - Good Times, I need your love
Sister Sledge - we are family
Jamiroquai - Runaway
the Police - Roxanne, Message in a bottle

I know you said no RHCP but I love Soul to Squeeze - a very melodic no nonsense approach to bass line writing and the bass pretty much holds the song together. some of their recent songs are also good examples of serving the song with no pyrotechnics involved.
another hischool bassists' favorite would be RATM's Bullet in the head. helped me a lot as a teen to learn about keeping time, developing stamina and consistency of playing dynamics.
