Sir Paul solos?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Folks,

A recent thread on Sir Paul McCartney started me thinking...

can anyone recall a recorded solo by him in a song?

My Beatles fan friends insist that he had way too much taste to do a solo.

Anyone?

Thanks,
B

I can't think of one. But then, I have no taste; I love taking solos.

He also recorded the guitar solos for "Drive My Car" and "Back in the U.S.S.R.".

Since when is not doing solos (especially by a great player like Macca) an indication of good taste?

Didn't know that. Quite nice strat tone in Drive My Car. I think the it is Back In The USSR that he played the drums too...when Ringo left for some weeks or days.

Here's the best McCartney solo bass lick (IMO, of course):

I love Macca but diddling on a few instruments for a basic I, IV, V progression while a crowd lamely claps in time is discouraging for some reason...

I apologize for the implication that bass solos are indicative of poor taste. I avoid 'em out of my own prejudices. May be a holdover from my first mentor on the bass - an old R&B and country guy. But there don't seem to be any true solos on record; lots of great, tasteful rockin licks, though. I agree that those solo Abbey Road sessions are ... kind of... embarrassing. What was he trying to do, show that he didn't need John, Ringo or George? As you can see, he ends up with pretty good English blues. But not The Beatles. Hey, thanks for taking the time to add to the thread.

I wonder if you can class the fuzz bass track on Think For Yourself as a solo?

I Want You (She's So Heavy) - the whole song is almost a bass solo for McCartney!

In "I'll Cry Instead," Paul does a very short rundown during the lyric "Show you what you're lovin' man can do." Only eight beats, but it's just bass.

Not bass, but the solo on Taxman is fantastic. Tear it up Sir Macca.
