So Hendrix Played Bass on All Along the Watchtower + eh?

Sign in to disble this ad
I seen a TV doc called Classic Albums: Electric Ladyland.

It said Hendrix played a lot of the Bass on that Album
including AATW.

Noel Redding said he was pissed of with Hendrix cause
he would let just anyone wander into the recording sessions
of Electric Ladyland.

He said he went into his Rec booth one time and someone was
in it and they said ,"Who are you"......Redding said,
Well I'm the Bands Bass player.

He said that was it........He left Hendrix after that.

Would be interesting to know for sure what songs Hendrix did
play Bass on. All Along the Watchtower has some amazing Bass.
Especially at the end.
Also some other great Bass on that Album.
I have no doubts that Hendrix could play amazing Bass.

Not that Noel R ain't a great Bass player of course.

Awhile ago, someone here posted a link to a very informative site dealing with this topic.
Anyone recall that link?
...I do remember a picture of Hendrix playing a Fender bass (upside down, of course) at that site.

Not to piss anyone off-
Redding never floated my boat. You have heard the story how Redding got the bass gig with Hendrix, right?
IMHO, Mitchell & Cox were a lot better...I would think Jack Bruce or Entwistle, Mitchell, & Hendrix woulda been interesting, too.

This is also the reason why Dave Finnegan plays the Hammond B3 on "Crosstown Traffic".

I may have read many years ago ...I'm 49 , but No,
As of now I don't know.

I can remember being very impressed with the Bass on
"Axis Bold as love" when I was school kid.
Ain't heard that Album in about as many years though.

Arrr right...Found it.......

He was hired in as a bass player, reportedly due in some part to his look (a huge afro and his trademark granny glasses), despite his real desire to continue as a guitarist.

It's funny, because he showed up and grabbed the guitar, and Jimi said, "What do you think you're doing? You better grab that bass. After that, Noel wasn't too crazy about me."

Yeah Woodchuck, Crosstown traffic has a great Bass riff.

I was getting into it the other day, it was at the end of
the song where I started to pick it up.

Oh!!!!....and not to mention "Come On".

The part in the middle where Hendrix is soloing.
The bass really comes to the fore.

We have a winner.

Chas Chandler(Animals' bassist & Hendrix manager) hired Redding.

Weren't they (the Experience) responsible for Clapton's hairdo around that time?

(no, seriously.)

How about Jack Casady, Hendrix and Mitchell? He played on Voodoo Chile I think

Yes......Hendrix did Play Bass on Watchtower.

Here is what Mitch Mitchel had to say.......

"
Jimi was a fine bass player, one of the best, very Motown-style.
He was a very busy bass player, which in retrospect was so good for me to have played behind as it stopped me overplaying, which I did do particularly on several of the
album tracks.

Maybe that was a source of the friction between Noel and Hendrix.
Noel being a frustrated guitarist and Jimi knowing exactly what he wanted from the bass.

'All Along the Watchtower' is a classic example of Hendrix's bass playing. Even being left handed he had no problem picking up a right handed bass - he just had the touch. I think Noel had got pissed off and was across the road in the pub - but the track didn't suffer.

"
Mitch also says Jack Casady did play bass on Voodoo Chile.

Yeah Golden Boy.....
I was thinking of then too, but couldn't come up with
the good pics that you have.

You would have to think hendrix had something to
do with it. I mean...it would take some effort for Clapton
to get his hair to look and stay like that.

Well I quess anyway....I'm no Hair dresser
