So I walk into the Jazz Cafe last night...

...and I was completely mobbed. There was one guy who stood out though and insisted on having a photo taken with me:

...OK, so it was largely the other way round . I went to see him at the Jazz Cafe in Camden, London last night (03/07/06). Boy was it worth it. I'd met Marcus once before at a Bass Clinic last year, and to see him do a proper set was immense. His live tone was to die for, delivering a huge hit in the chest every time his thumb came down, just amazing. The rest of the band was completely dialed in as well, and Gregoire Maret completely flipped my admittedly brief thoughts on harmonicas upside down.

After the set, Marcus came down through the crowd to sign CDs, tickets, even a camera! It's nice to know that there are still people out there that will come down and sign autographs for the fans after many a horror story about so and so and whatshis/hername going bezerk on fans. Really made the night for me

Were any other TBers there? I can't have been the only one, surely?

Marty.

Whaaat?! Awesome. I didn't get to see the Marcus show near here (Toronto) but that's awesome. Marcus is a really cool dude, I'd love to meet him some day. That's awesome.

Also, you look remarkably like a 16 year old at my high school named Joel. Scary, actually.

lol fair enough, I'm 18, but yeah, short and look young I suppose. If I was 16 I wouldn't have been let in to see the great man (18+). When he does come back around to your area I really do seriously reccomend that you pounce on the opportunity. Great music, great guy.

Marty

THOSE GIGS KICKED ASS!!!!! And hey, Marty, weren't you standing right next to me? I was the mad Yank right up front!!!!
To answer the question about his basses, he also used his Fodera fretless 5-string, beautiful tone.
I went to BOTH nights, they were spectacular, but one of the highlights for me was his extended tapping in the middle of "Panther" on the 4th--got to watch me some awesome 4th of July fireworks, but not of the explosive powder kind!!

And yes, Marcus was totally awesome with the signing...brief chat...personalized the signings however you liked...most humble and easy-going guy.

Totally capped my week--also got to meet with Steve Lewinson of Simply Red for 20 min. on Saturday--he walked me through some ear training, among other things--it was great to finally meet and chat with him, I've been a fan for a while.

Getting to meet my two favorite bassists in the same week--I'm beyond grateful and ecstatic beyond words.

AND I'M STILL IN ENGLAND FOR TWO MORE WEEKS!!!!!!

Thanks be to the higher power for the most charmed time of my life.

that must have been awesome... I have officially missed him like 3 times due to a gig or being out of town for business...

He was here two month's ago opening up for Stanley Clarke and George Duke...

...and where was my ugly-bassplaying-butt, you might ask? At the crappiest cover gig less than a mile away in Buckhead!!!

May well have been. I was the short one in the black t-shirt, slightly to the right hand side of the stage and about one person from the front. Oh, and screaming "Power!" at the encore.

Ditto with the basses. He had a 5 string sig in the background too, but was never played. Of course there was also his bass clarinet.

Here's a rig pic:

Note Action Man on one of the 4x10s...critical to attaining that tone

Marty.

Ah EBS, no wonder his tone is that good.

I've nver seen such positive reviews in magazines than I have for the latest EBS rig.

Now that's funny. I went to see Mike Stern in Toronto instead of the Marcus Show, that Aaron Saunders mentioned, that same night. But hey, I saw Marcus at the Bluenote in NYC. . .
