I've been a guitarist for 20+ years but only a bassist for 8 or 9. I started playing bass out of a need my church had but quickly fell in love. I've been pretty active as a bassist and on TB in the last few years. The problem is with the fact that whenever I see a guitarist shred some awesome scales up and down the fretboard I get jealous. I used to be able to do that but, since I've picked up bass, I can't do that anymore. It seems like I'm just getting tired of being left out of the limelight and being a "foundational piece" of the band. I want to be seen and shine on stage, not just support the music with the rhythm section. Yeah, I could slap the crap out of my basses, and I do that on occasion, but in real life gigging that's not always an option. I just miss the attention I used to get after an awesome solo and the attention I used to get from the chicks. As a bassist I find it hard to even get a phone number from anyone except a drummer who wants to start his own band.
Please guys, help me and talk me out of going back to little strings.

I think you should do it if that is what you're feeling. You can always go back to bass later. Watch how many people will offer to buy your Elrick if you do make the switch! |

Seriously though, do what's gonna' make you the happiest.

Yeah, gear comes and goes though. If you got really cool guitar gear again, you wouldn't miss the bass stuff much. Wasn't that cool Elrick at the GTG last week yours?
I notice you are a Phil Keaggy fan. I am old enough to have seen him with Glass Harp back in the day. He was and still is one of the world's best.

G. | Yeah, that Elrick was mine. The thing's a beast, ain't it? Yeah, Phil Keaggy is one of my idols as far as guitarists go. They actually used to say I sounded like a mix between Phil and Leo Kottke. I'll be the first one to say I fall way short though. Those 2 guys are some good players.

Less stuff to learn
If you're not feelin it sure.. jump (we won't even call you a traitor)
It is tough to be good at both at the same time.. drums and bass.. or keys and guitar.. not bass and guitar

If being the rock star is what motivates you, rather than a true love of the groove, then it sounds like guitar is where you belong anyway. Leave the bass to those of us who really love it...

They are both superlative players. |

Keep it. You found a love in bass for a reason..... just cause your jonesin for the neighbors grass doesnt mean you wont want to rip up the lower end eventually.
Play both. Find a band where you and some other members can switch off in the middle of a set.
Enjoy the fact you are a well rounded musician and enjoy it to the full potential.
