So are put downs the norm here?

I've been a TBer since 2003, but for some reason I only recently started checking out the bassists section. I'm amazed, so far, at how many people slam other musicians. Is this pretty much the norm here?

I totally agree, though I also see it in the basses subforum. Lots of unneeded bashing.

I concur. Putting someone down is never a good thing, whether it be a bass you dont enjoy or their style or skill.

We are all different, accept that.

We have to put other bassists down to build our own self-esteem. In fact, I'm putting down Nathan East right now, so I can imagine I play better than him.

I think the internet, not just this forum, is full of bashers and critics alike. It's so easy to slam someone's name in the ground when no one can see you.

Awesome, I'm doing that to Adam Nitti right now.

Touché, Munji.

And Capn, I agree. People were to meet in person, mouths would shut and opinions stay personal.

Except at the GTG, which I will bash you all to the ground!

Is it bashing to say that someone looks like a Klingon on crack?

No, not at all. That would be a compliment for that guy, actually. That, and a shirt and some pants.

I bashed a local bassist once. He started it though. I got aggravated assault.

If someone is seeking advise about a product and I or anyone else doesn't like it then "bashing" is required. It defeats the purpose of getting opinions on gear if those that don't like it for what ever reason can only bite their tongue. As for bass player bashing, thats a tad different. If someone doesn't like a players style or what not then use a bit of tact while you critique them.

I know when I used to mod the bassists forum I would never allow someone to insult a player unless it was a tactful and polite manner.

It's summertime. School's out. The frequency and severity of said bashing is directly related to the junior high school calendar. If said bashers actually made it out of junior high, they are developmentally delayed and/or have a small wiener.
