Some of my fave bassists are in death metal such as Alex Webster and Steve DiGiorgio but mostly of everyone i know wont look past the whole Death THING and start screaming "shut up"

Kind of hard to look past the "death" thing if it's called "death metal"

I think it would help to have an opinion if I could tolerate listening to almost any metal today, let alone death metal. And what I have heard you cannot hear the bass anyhow as they're just usually duplicating the guitar riffs, the basses eq'd to be tinny and the guitars tuned down and eq'd to be huge.

That's my opinion.

You might get more replies in a forum other than basses.

This post will probably be moved, but I remember a while ago someone was asking about screamo, which alot of people look down on here much like death metal. Personally I started out in a death metal band and as my technique and skill increased I gradually moved away from that. HOWEVER, it doesn't matter much what people think about your personal preferences, all that matters is what you like.

Post some links to a few songs where the bassist really stands out on the mix. I find it very hard to tell what the bassist is actually playing in most death metal music other than chugging away with the geetars. My son LOVES the music, I try to keep an open mind and ear

I'd give them more credibility if they tuned their basses to D - E - A - D....

But otherwise, it is almost to the point of once you have heard one death metal band...you've heard them all. I know there a re a few more than talented bassists in the genre...but I leave the death metal to the kids....

And no I'm not trying to be an arse, but you asked my opinion.....

Yes you do. You win a Death Metal Cookie. I understand they don't taste very good.

You're going to get a lot of elitist responses asking that, especially since there seems to be quite the crowd here stuck on a more "traditional" style of bass playing.

I listen to all kinds of music. I do mean all kinds. From bluegrass to death metal to industrial ebm to classical and symphony. I would argue the only type of music I don't listen to is top 40 radio hits of any era and rap. I'm currently in an all original-material band that leans towards a death n' roll (something like Six Feet Under but not quite ) style of music.

Bass playing for a metal band of any genre is just as valid as playing funk or classic rock. They work just as hard and have potentially as much talent. And a lot of the death metal musicians I've spoken with are a lot more open minded than people who are stuck in other genres

Music is music. If it sounds good to you, then it's a valid style. A bassist is a bassist, no matter if you like what they play or not...give them respect for sharing the same love for the bass that you have. Just my opinion.

I love metal, but I can't stand death metal. It just doesn't sound like music to me.

As for death metal bassists, can't say I've ever heard one.

It is a shame that we can't heard the bass player in metal because some of them are really good and play something completely different of what the guitar player doing.

But well that style is great to get speed , stamina and strength

I like some of the riffs, but it's the singers that make me

Now I do like Sepultura and Soul Fly, but that's about as close to death type metal that I can get.

To the "You can't hear the bassist in death metal" and the "the bass playing isn't very technical, all he does is follow the guitar players!"

Give Cannibal Corpse a bit of a listen. Not my favourite band by a long shot, but Alex Webster is an amazing bass player.Cannibal Corpse ; Instrumental Give that a listen, there aren't even any "cookie monster" vocals to put you off.
