Meshell is the real deal.
Pure funk & Soul.
I was into here Band back in the late 90's. (Dyson, Cato, Federico, Gene Lake)
Meshell's groove is huge. |

Thanks for this - haven't seen it in awhile, and was having a rough day at work. This has me set right again

I'm not a big fan of that rear pick-up tone, but it works like mad in this track.
I like her tone better on this one: YouTube - ‪Me'shell Ndegeocello - GOD.FEAR.MONEY (AOL session)‬‏

Here's a killer live clip of Diggin' You featuring both Meshell and David Dyson. It is hard to state how much I loved Meshell during the 1990s. At a time when the sort of bass driven funk I had grown up on was really hard to get, Meshell carried the torch in America. The Acid Jazz folks in the UK did the same overseas.
Of course, Urban Gospel was slammin' too, but I was not yet into sacred music.

P.S., I love how one of the backup singers looks back when Dyson starts playing the bridge part in the wrong section. |

A couple of years ago I got a chance to see her live rockin a FREE show at Lincoln Center in NYC. I was SO stoked to go so I went with a few bass buddies and friends. To our utter disappointment, it was the worst show any of us had ever seen to this day. We left maybe halfway through after almost 40% of the audience had already walked out. I was so embarrassed for her because I know what a badass she is but between bad sound in that outdoor space, her bass tone being absolutely awful through some old rented GK/Hartke rig (that broke after the 2nd song so she just didn't touch a bass after that for the rest of the show despite there being another bass rig on stage), out of tune vocals (they clearly couldn't hear themselves which means either no soundcheck or a terrible soundman), and just an all around boring show, it was a disaster. I would see her again and I continue to love and enjoy her albums but I'll never forget that show and I'm still confused to this day of what actually happened on that stage that day....but GREAT clips guys I wish those were the shows I could've been at! |
