United Press International (www.upi.com) has issued the following report:

CBS put VAN HALEN rumors to rest for good by announcing a
supergroup lineup that will choose its vocalist in the next installment of Rock Star.

SUPERNOVA - comprised of MOTLEY CRUE drummer Tommy Lee, former METALLICA bassist Jason Newsted and former GUNS N' ROSES guitarist Gilby Clarke - will let viewers narrow the field of hopefuls like INXS did in the first season of the summer hit, Daily Variety reported Thursday. Once the field is cut to two, the group will choose its vocalist in the show's finale.

Supernova's first album will be produced by Butch Walker, who has worked with Lee as well as AVRIL LAVIGNE, PINK and BOWLING FOR SOUP.

Further to the above report, Variety (www.variety.com) reports that Dave Navarro and Brooke Burke will return as hosts. Each weekly seg will also now feature guest appearances by celebs or rockers.

"Friends of mine, like SLASH, MACY GRAY, MOBY and ROB ZOMBIE, will join us and throw in their two cents about who should stay and who should go," Navarro said.

"Supernova" how long did it take them to come up with that name?
It sounds like a fun show for those who want to watch it, and I'm glad that Jason Newsted has got a nice music related paycheck coming his way. It just would shock the whatever out of me if this ends up with any legitimate artistic value.

By the way, Woodchuck is right, some tone deaf kid shoouting into a mike while hopping up and down isn't much of a music education. At least you might learn some music hisory if you study hip hop samples.

Seriously, any involvement with music can lead to great dividends. Remember our own Woodchuck started as a rapper.

My guess is that you are not a 13-19 year old kid either. The bottom line is that learning has to start somewhere. A sample might start an education of r&b and maybe learning an instrument, just like the White Stripes might eventually lead a guitar playing kid to Jeff Beck.

OT a bit, but it's a five year cycle for the most part.
From the first time you really see a band in/on main stream radio/MTV. 5 years later, they are gone, a "you still listen to that?!?!!" band.
Just look at it from a Billboard top 40 perspective. Plus combine that with the group that buys more CD's than any other for the most part: 14 to 17 year old white girls, followed closely (but not as close as you would think) by 14 to 17 year old white boys. Basicly high school kids.

And from what I under stand, Jason Newsted doesn't need a paycheck. He made millions from his days in Metallica and still gets a pretty good check from them now.

He is one rocker/metal guy I always respected. So yeah Smash, link us to this interview!

The dis is totally deserved. 90% of the stuff is assembled with the default factory loops in the drum machines and synths. The reason it all sounds the same is that it is the same.

I bought a mic preamp from a guy who was doing hip-hop. He seemed genuinely surprised when I told him I would be using the channel strip to track instruments like bass, acoustic & electric guitar, piano, horns etc. He told me how all of his instruments were coming from loops and samples now and he had "no need" for that preamp anymore. I find the vast majority of rap (okay hip-hop) has little nuance (no feel), little dynamic variation (all compressed to the hilt and in your face), no tempo variation (very metronomic), and the drum machines sound extremely boring using odd patterns that sound like they were put together by keyboardists and not drummers.

For some reason most of the vocalists sing / shout way behind the beat. This must be either a stylistic decision or the vast majority of these rappers can't keep simple time.

I'm usually pretty ecclectic in my tastes and have 900 albums and CD's that cover quite a variety of music. For some reason I just can't stand that assembled "You mo-fo, sumbiotch, ho, gonna git ya, look at my Escalade, bad-boy, bling-drenched, "F - U" Suckah lyrics and the borring "music". I hope it dies soon, hopefully by today.

Just my opinion, and no I'm not 13, but when I was 13, my music was not so establishment. That's what hip-hop is now, it's totally corporate and mainstream with its own rigid establishment.

Wow, this thread is all over the place!

-Like it or not, hip hop is here to stay. While rock bands seem to be making a come-back, I don't think hip hop sales are hurting any.

-Most mainstream hip hop is prtetty bad, that's why you need to check out the underground.

-I recently hung out at the home of a friend who is an incredible sax player. We're the same age and he has toured the world and played with some big names. HE DOSEN"T OWN A TV. If I had practiced as much as he has instead of watching TV, I wouldn't be posting on an internet forum from my desk at work.

They were who I heard were working out a deal on that second season.
We all know how they can keep singers so it seemes very likely...

I played in the house band for the Montreal auditions of Rockstar. It was televised on the Canwest/Global morning show. A female singer won it here and is on her way to the national auditions. I think I would be a little frightened if I was a female singer in this band!

I saw some of that. You were playing a natural Sadowsky 5-string, right?
