Some rockin' bass players at the Beacon Theater in NYC

Was anyone else on TB at the Hot Tuna shows at the Beacon Theater this past weekend? They were amazing. I flew up from Florida to attend both shows.

The shows were billed as a celebration of Jorma Kaukonen's impending 70th birthday. They were indeed a celebration with many guest players both nights.

I recently took Jorma's fingerpicking guitar class at Fur Peace Ranch, I had been there before a couple of times for Casady's bass class. Both amazing players. They and the rest of the band were on fire this weekend, I've really never heard them play better in decades of Hot Tuna shows.

Friday night in addition to guest guitarists Warren Haynes, Larry Campbell, Bill Kirchen, Happy Traum, and a few others and guest keyboardist Bruce Hornsby, they brought out DB player Byron House who has worked with Kaukonen on other projects.

Byron and Jack played some insanely great bass duels/duets, trading leads, call and answer, and all sorts of great lines, and the top quality sound system at the Beacon made this a bass eargasm!!

Saturday night's show was highlighted by appearances by guitarists Steve Earle and Michael Falzarano, keyboardist Pete Sears and ex Tuna drummer Bob Steeler. And Bob Weir who was great!!!

And then... Oteil Burbridge sat in on a bunch of songs with Jack, trading solos, swirling leads and rhythms, and just making incredible music. And this in synch with TWO great drummers and the great sound system it was just heaven.

Some stuff has creeped onto youtube but you had to be there!!!

Here's a blog about the shows

Like to have

Like to have been there. Been listening to Allman bros "Hittin the note" and Otiel B is amazing.
One interesting sidenote , Pete Sears is a very good bass player too. There is a project called "Moonalice" Jack sometimes plays bass in, and Pete and others do a great job if Jack is not there. Some of these longtime band regulars are amazingly versatile. Guys like Jack give me hope I can gig till I'm 70, (not as well of course).

Cool. I've seen Oteil with his own band a couple of times, he's amazing and a nice guy. He opened for Hot Tuna at a show I went to a couple of years ago, I think he and Jack are friends.

I've heard some Moonalice stuff. Pete Sears was really hot on Saturday night. My wife is a fine pianist and she was really blown away by what she heard at that show. She had never heard him before.
