"Soul Power" Rhythm sections?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just saw the Documentary "Soul Power" about the music festival in Zaire African in 74'. Was blown away by the Crusader's and the JB's rhythm section. I know for the Crusaders it was Larry Carlton on guitar, Joe Sample and Wilton Felder on horn (same who played bass on the Jackson Five's "I want you back") and Stix Hooper on drums. Who was the bad-assed bass player? Was it Robert Popwell?

Also who was the rhythm section for the JB's on the James Brown sequence, they were (naturally) funky as hell, couldn't tell if it was Bootsy who was the bass player.

Was that the show staged in conjunction with The Rumble In The Jungle (Ali vs Foreman)...featuring The Spinners as well? If so...it was a great lineup and a Don King financial fiasco...ripping off two African governments.

Yep, that's the one. The movie mostly dealt with the music festival, Spinners were there, BB King, Bill Withers, etc.

There was a documentary made about the Ali-Fraizer fight but not the Ali-Foreman fight right?

Bootsy had joined Clinton and P-Funk a couple of years before

I just noticed this other Bootsy thread where they mention a Fred Thomas who played on "The Big Payback" and James did indeed perform a version of that on the movie. So was it Fred Thomas who played in Zaire? Also noticed the drummer was a younger fella.

Aside - the commentary noted that the bassist for Mariam Makeba was Bill Lee, Spike Lee's dad.

There was a documentary on the Ali-Foreman fight..a good one, and it also featured stuff about the concert and some video footage. There was also an HBO film about Don King which had a lot on the whole Ziare thing and how Kings partner in the concert Lloyd Price (Mr Personality) got royally screwed.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that was Fred Thomas at the Soul Power concert. The Crusaders were great on that show also. Larry Carlton sure looked pasty white!
