soul/R&b bassist that played fender jazz basses

hey everyone,

so i have always been a p-bass kinda guy but while looking for a bass i found this very special fender standard MIM jazz bass that's won my heart, mostly because of how well it feels in my hands, but now the sound is starting to grow on me. i can get some really great soul/r&b non-slap pop & funk tones out of it with my mxr di that come close to sounding like a p-bass while retaining its own identity all together.

so...

this got me to wondering if there were any big examples of bassist that played soul/r&b and non slap and pop funk on that would normally be attributed to a bassist on a p-bass, but on a jazz bass.

the fabulous webernet only returns p-bassist.

i was hoping i could draw from the knowledge of members here.

anyone have a few names for me?

thanks in advance to any and all who respond.

Jerry Jemmont +1, like with King Curtis

Bootsy Collins, with James Brown

Verdine White, EW&F

John Paul Jones (Lemon Song is as soul/R&B as it gets)

Man! Really appreciate it everyone. A lot of these guys I've listened to before but had no clue what they were playing. Others I hadn't heard before and am discovering them for the first time. So thanks.

I can guarantee you there are a ton more, too. I have memories of the 70's where it would seem most of the R+B,Funk/Disco bands bassits used a Jazz.

Jerry Jemmott has already been mentioned, but he's the first one who comes to mind.

Lemon song?

Do you mean the song they stole from Howlin' Wolf?
The one he had to sue them (and win) over to get his rights?

That's 12 bar blues anyway.....

Didn't know that. He used a Precision and an Alembic before working with Music Man on the original StingRay. Later he used a Yamaha, and a Treker.

I've never seen any photos nor read any interviews where he's ever mentioned a Jazz Bass.

Seriously?

So far I'm lost in Jerry Jemmott. Man. He's grooving the hell out of that jazz bass with flats!

James Jamerson, the original "Funk Brother".

casbonano 12-29-2012 08:33 PM

I thought Jamerson always played a stock P-bass, until that got stolen. Then he got another stock p-bass and played that until tht one got stolen. Then he died. Literally.

C.Linton 12-29-2012 09:09 PM

Jamerson might have played a Jazz for a very short bit, but the majority of his work was done with a Precision, and that's what he's known for.

Before playing six string exclusively, Anthony Jackson did countless national level sessions on a Jazz body/Precision neck parts bass.
