He's not an official member of the band. Just hired as a bass-playing side man.

They thought it would be a good idea to have one actual musician in the band

Edit: Sorry, I thought the question was why the RSs hired Daryl Jones... My response stands

Chuck Leavell has been in the band for years and years but most folks associate him with the Allman Bros. He gets little notice for his work with the Stones.

I don't think the Stones are too worried about street cred. They're definitely not worrying about what a bunch of people are talking about on a bass message board.

Don't forget they had Mick Taylor for a while, too. And C Leavell has been their musical director for about 20 years or so now. Still doesn't make me want to see them, or listen to much of their music...
