P bass!

A jazz would do a fine job as well.

Stingray not so much IMO. It could cut the funk but probably not the soul/r&b

j basses are more versatile, but for THAT sound, you cant beat a p-bass. role off the treble and shake some booties!

Fender Jazz or Precision. Stingray isn't 60's Soul, it's more like late 70's Funk and Disco. The Alembic is more a Stanley thing, not a genre thing IMO.

P-bass for Jamerson/ Duck Dunn groove....J-bass for Larry Graham, early Marcus slap groove. A pretty good modern bass for both those passive tones is the Fender Roscoe Beck, IMHO.

Your poll needs an "All Of The Above" category! Plenty of prime examples of spankalicious greasy old-skool funk got played on all those instruments.

Órale,
The more I listen ( XM-The Groove), It's becoming apparent that a good majority of hit's have been played on a P-Bass, so, I'm going that way! And finally after all these years, I purchased a P-Bass, and with my Band, my Stingray and P both work as far as tone and tunes.

I voted Jazz bass for 'funk'. Now if you're talking old school r&b, then P-bass it is. The MusicMan came after funk was out already so even though it was widely used, I think the Jazz was used more in the context of funk music.

Even though the bass player in "Bird", starring Forrest Whittaker as Charlie Parker, was playing one!

Probably a P. But a J with extra hot pups could definitely cover that ground as well!
