Squeeze Bassist Appreciation Thread (Wilkinson, Bentley, Kakouli)

Sign in to disble this ad
Regardless of whether it was Harry Kakouli, John Bentley, or Keith Wilkinson, Squeeze has always had great bass players - guys who know how to construct the perfect bass line to compliment the songwriting of Difford and Tillbrook.

Most of these videos have Keith Wilkinson on bass, as it is just easier to find videos of good quality during the time period he was with Squeeze. He was in the band the longest of the bass players, but Bentley constructed many of the bass lines for the bands biggest hits. Kakouli was the early bass player, playing on the "Cool For Cats" album.

I can't possibly be the only guy on Talkbass that loves Squeeze, could I ?

I have always been a fan of "Brit-Pop". Squeeze and XTC are a bassplayers delight. (Sir Paul too)

He's a great player - lots of people don't even realize he played primarily fretless till he goes off and does one of those crazy licks of his. Really good intonation and tasteful as heck !

YOWZA !!!

(sadly, I only say that because I know she can play. She's not just "window dressing", so to speak.)

Had the pleasure of sitting five feet in front of Lucy (and the band) in Pittsburgh last year, then hanging out with them for about an hour after the show. They're all very cool. Lucy & I have traded e-mails a few times since.

Squeeze was on Hard Rock Live or something like that about 12 years ago, and they had a bassist with an african sounding name (Timari Sohn? Something like that). He was unbelievably good, I've never read anything about him since then or seen him playing. And never got a chance to tape that show. Anyone know who that is?

That would have been Hilaire Penda , who was only with the band a comparatively short time - about 1 to 1.5 years.

Thank you! Halaire Penda- don't know where I got Timari Sohn from! Anyway, he was amazing, had some very cool takes on those parts. It's been a while since I listened to squeeze. I have lots of time in the car tomorrow, may be time for a refresher.

+1.

I am trying to learn fretless, and am listening to a bunch of players: Jaco, Mick Karn, Pino, Jack Bruce, etc. But Keith Wilkinson's lines on Cosi Fan Tutti Frutti (now there's an oddity!) are my favorite. I wish I could play like that.

Keith is definitely a monster player. Tone, taste, technique - he's got it all.

I saw Bentley with Squeeze last year and let me tell you he's no Lucy Shaw. But seriously, he played his little ass off. On an old Stingray. Fantastic.
