I've always wondered......was the Squier company named after Chris Squier?

No. It's Chris Squire. Although many people do incorrectly spell Fender Squier as Squire

Here's the "official" story, although I doubt its veracity:

You made my morning with that Squier Link , love the picture of V.C. Squier. Seems that The Squier brand is making in-roads this year with their new products. I mean for $200 ( I bought one a few years back) with either a Bass or a Guitar you are in business throw in a $100 Squier amp and you are all set.............................

While this is a hilarious question from the OP, and clearly not meant to be taken seriously, I feel kinda stupid for even looking at it. I mean, why would Fender name their budget line after a bassist known for playing Rics? And why would they spell it differently?

Wait, why am I trying to respond to a question that was so obviously meant as a joke?

I'm convinced that V.C. Squier had about as much to do with musical instruments as Colonel Harlan Sanders had to do with a secret blend of 11 herbs and spices.

Why would you doubt it's veracity? That IS the story, whether you believe it or not. (although I can fathom no reasonable explanation why you wouldn't)

You're right, I don't have a solid reason to disbelieve, and what's the difference anyway.

My skepticism simply comes from 25 years in the advertising biz, where we sometimes play fast and loose with history. For instance, did you know that V.C.'s boyhood nickname was "Villy?"

But it's pretty well documented in sources that V. C Squier strings were making strings for Fender for a long time. Also that Fender bought the company around the time Fender was acquired by CBS, a purchase headed up by Don Randall, who also negotiated the deal to sell Fender to CBS. See Forrest White's book "Fender- The Inside Story". Also, the 1969 (or '70, I don't recall which) listed CBS Musical Instruments' companies, includiing Rogers drums, Rhodes keyboards, Gulbransnen organs, V C Squier strings, Leslie, Steinway pianos, Gemeinhart flutes, and Lyon & Healy harps (the real ones, not those annoying things people bring to blues jams).

It's not mentioned on the Wiki page for Squier....
Squier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

But does that tell you something about Wiki or Fender...?

Was the original Japanese spelling of Squire a mistake then? I seem to recollect that the Japanese Squires were a quality instrument, superior to today's Squiers.

It would be Wiki that's the problem. The Squier website is not the first and only place I read the story about V.C. Squier, BTW. (can't remember the other place I read it, but I did read it elsewhere)

No. The name has always been Squier.
Haven't you been paying attention?
Just to make sure, here's a link to the story AGAIN (and yes, it's true)
