Stadium Arcadium

As I start to make the way into old guy status I find myself behind the times. So I finally get around to picking up a copy of Stadium Arcadium after turning my 12-year daughter onto some older Chili stuff. I put the first CD in the car sterio and spun it for about a week. My impression was good songs with catchy hooks and nice use of texture. The bass playing is maybe not as acrobatic as BSSM but definitely tasty / soulful stuff. Then I throw in the second disk (Mars) and I barely get thru it. It seems like a different album. Am I missing something. Anyone blown away by the second one? Also curious if anyone knows Fleas setup on this album bass wise. I am not sure I hear 20 year old flat wounds like I thought he was thumping with that pink Jazz?

He runs it thru a lot of distortion.
I actually didn't like Stadium Arcadium much at all.
Although some of the songs, like "So Much I" and "Hump De Bump" are awesome.

I like the whole thing. It is just a different flavor than other chili stuff. I love Slow Cheetah.

I was a bit disapointed with that album. To me there's about 5-6 songs that kick major ass and the rest is filler material spread over the two records. This would've been a much better single cd than double.

I ended up keeping it in rotation for just a couple of weeks in my player, same as Californication. (BSSM and BTW have been in rotation in my player for YEARS)

I enjoyed the whole thing, actually prefer it overall to BSSM, it seemed more complete somehow.

I like both discs, just as well as old RHCP. It's just another evolution of the band. I couldn't be asked to pick 1 disc worth of 'favorites' from the duo. It's all good.

I'm right there with ya, in thinking that the first disc is stellar and the second one is yawn-inducing. I mean, when I bought the thing, I had already sworn off the Peppers because BTW wasn't interesting to me. However, SA came out, I heard "Dani California" or whatever, and decided to grab it for something new to listen to.

Now, I have this thing where I don't listen to everything when I buy new albums. It's sort of a way of having something new to listen to later on when I, for example, need a new Peppers fix. So, I listened to disc one over and over, loved every song but one. I didn't play a single song from disc two for a couple of months. Then, on a road trip to Cleveland, from Wisconsin, I popped in disc two. I could barely make it through it. Since then, I've discovered a few parts of songs that I like, but overall I don't think there's a single song on there that's killer from start to finish.

I for one love SA and think that it is one of their best. I was never all that into their older stuff, maybe because it is older than I am. I thought that SA was solid from start to finish. Not to mention that the hump de bump video is the best music video that I have ever seen.

i find both discs excellent. you say that mars is like a whole different album, which i would agree with, because thats the way they did it. It wasn't meant to be one huge album where both discs were similar sounding heh.

and yeah! its the '62 stack knob jazz bass with old flats. I hear the modulus on a few tracks though.

The first disc is more accessible - 'pop' for want of a better word. The second disc is more of a grower and personally I enjoy it more. Brilliant album IMO.

I concur.

I guess I just miss the old crazy funk.

Still happy for the purchase - 2 discs for $10.

Now if I can just see them tour before someone relapses and ODs

I think SA is a very well done album. Definitely a step up from By the Way IMHO.

To me, it's just an evolution towards more "pop" music by RHCP. And it's been happening for quite a while now. I can't say that I love it, but it's ok. I like the older stuff much more, has more energy.

I really like new discs. I think Flea layed down some tasty basslines. Sometimes less is more.
