I am suprised not to see more discussion around him, or maybe it happened already. Even though I mentioned Victor Wooten being the one I would vote for the top, I think honestly no great bass played talk can go by without talking about Stanley.

I saw him in concert with TRIO, Bela Fleck, Stan, JeanLucPonty unbeleivable stuff, all the technique you want but with maturity and wisdom, complexity...

After the intro I felt that I got my moneys worth.

The first time I saw him live was when RTF did a reunion in the early 80's

they came out and he flew a monster riff across the complete neck like it was nothing. As a a young kid it left a lasting impression

Have felt like I suck since

He's amazing! I'm surprised to see that he doesn't seem to be discussed a lot! Very cool player, I was actually listening to East River Driver not 10 minutes ago, but my favourite work by him is certainly "If This Bass Could Only Talk".

I love his tone too, very cool stuff! He has had quite a sizeable impact on my sound as a bass player, props to Stan!

Stanley turned me onto what bass could be, way back when.... He played here the same week Vic did and I had to make a choice.... a Hobson's choice... never having seen Vic...

He's a freakin Icon - I agree - I figured when I joined this site a few days ago I would see alot !

Truly a hero of mine - he's done it all - and did it as good as anybody.

To my memory, he was the first bassist of the modern era that could actually tour AS a lead bassist. Everone talks about Jaco (deservedly so) but in my memory Stanley was the first great electric bassist of the late 60's/early 70's. I got to see him live on one of his first solo tours. It was simply unbelievable.

I love Stanley's stuff. I really have to listen to more Return to Forever though, so far I've only heard his solo stuff.
School Days rules though.

Stanley tone

Stanley tone has been an inspiration for me too, as well as his tenor-bass. I string mine E-A-D-G-C nowso that I have normal and "tenor" in one.

Although his technique and melodies are out of my reach , I do practice playing some of his tunes, and intro's. I learn a lot from digging into his stuff.

All the favourites, "School Days", "Lopsi Loo", amaizing "Light as a feather" also can't forget "Hair" although that song is by Larry Graham I believe.

I just love the way his bass grooves and sings at the same time. Such a great mix of rithm and melody.

I've been wanting to do that for awhile too. Do you just buy a 6-string set or do they sell E to C 5-string sets?

Correct! Very cool cover, and getting Satch in was an inspired move!

And yes, he was indeed the first bassist to have a solo tour. I wish I could have seen that, I hear Stanley is amazing live. I suppose I'll just content myself with going to see level 42 in October (Mark King has taken a huge amount of influence from Stan!).

I end up buying 6 string set and toss the low B, however You can get DR custom set if you go through factory instead of retail, they sent me 4 sting set plus a high C.

Very nice guys, I love their strings too.

No Idea, but I will try to find out.

It sounded nice, I think Stanley can make any bass sound nice.

I went to see the TRIO here in Ottawa, but that was the gig where Stanley didn't make it because he had problems at the border.

A local bassist and drummer filled in. I'll bet it was a memorable evening for them!!!
