I was looking at a McCartney YouTube clip someone posted elsewhere in these forums and came across this one for Stanley Clarke. Man, does this ever add a new perspective on upright bass for me. Very cool... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py3jT0uaZw0&NR=1

| | | | I have to check that out. Stanley, in my opinion stagnated on electric bass for the last 20-30 years-= Upright is a different story.
I really disliked his last smooth jazz/film pieces, that to me, came off as pompous & over sophisticated, like something you expect someone my age to listen too.
On the other hand the guy rewrote electric bass, what more can he say on it?
To me, he has said a lifetime of electric bass back then. Now upright gets it's turn.
I found it kind of sad later all these electric bass clips where he still has to go back to playing School Days or the other song (I wanna play For You?). So Cliche for him now.
I hope George Duke does not have to go around with the Dukey Stick!
George Duke played some killer jazz in his early pre Clarke days
I liked Animal Logic though. |

Get Toys of Men! Clarke's electric work is very fresh, and full of fire. You will recognize him in a heartbeat, but he avoids old licks and cliches. His acoustic work is great too, but frankly it is not quite as fresh as the electric IMO.

First of all, I'll have to tip my hat to those who like Animal Logic. They were fantastic, and hugely underrated! I still listen to them regularly, and it's definitely some of my favourite "Stanley Clarke" stuff!
The Toys of Men is just amazing though. His playing just sounds so fresh and inspired, and he has his fire back! And his tone is just gorgeous, even on the Victor Bailey acoustic, wow! The Toys of Men is without a doubt one of my favourite records of '07. Stan is the first to admit that he can be a bit lazy at times and has made music that is not befitting of his stature. But WOW, has he pulled this one off! |

Our local PBS station aired the highlights and this was included. They also showed Stanley and his band, which included Armand Sabal Lecco doing a killer version of "School Days." Stanley is the man! |

+1! The man can certainly play. Stanley didn't invite him to tour for no good reason!
I wish I could find a way to upload the footage. Unfortunately, it's on VHS. There was a nice little "slap duel" between Stanley an Armand-no losers there!
Cheers,
Kevin |

| | | I went to the Rite of Strings show a couple of years ago here in Detroit, had 2nd row Orchestra Pit seats Stanley did that upright solo but he was standing up. I swear I thought the upright was going to end up in splinters by the time he was done, he was attacking it so aggresively. More laid back in that video, I hope some has captured/posted a vid like I remember... |

What a contrast - the two ends of the spectrum - as far as DB Technique is concerned!

Then he reinvents himself on the EB tracks, and kills on the DB tracks. "Wow" is all I can say. I'm speechless. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
