I heard NYC is dead as far as a music scene. Brooklyn is where it's at. This is what I've been told when asking the same question to resident musicians.

You'll probably find a ton of people to play with though.

Nervous.

Anything new can make you nervous, that's normal. Be professional, responsible, know your parts, be open to criticism without taking it personally - and if your chops are good, your networking skills are sharp and you pound the pavement, beat the bushes and...

Dude, stay home! It's much easier!

Just kidding. Go for it! Be confident and positive!

Good luck.

Phoenix, Arizona's music scene is booming right now, and it's only growing bigger.

But tZer had it right. Good luck, mate!

Brooklyn is part of NYC...

Anyway, good idea. Start a band. Especially if you write the first songs. Then you will have a strong voice in it.

You would die in the current economic climate... Not wise to make your way to NYC or anywhere on either coast, really. My guitarist wanted to move to portland but we convinced him to stick around. Unemployment there is god-awful and to try and get noticed in a big city like that is tough. You don't have to come out of NYC to get famous. Slipknot is from Des Moines, 311 is from Omaha... Talent is everywhere, as well as the opportunity to get famous. You just need to have the motivation to make it happen for yourself. In fact, staying in a smaller town where there's less competition to "make it" could be a major help.

GO TO PHILLY. Seriously, the music scene is, from what I hear, above average compared to other cities.
