Starting to feel sorry for Jason Newsted

Sign in to disble this ad
when i first started to listen to metallica i went along with the common view that cliff was the best and jason sucked, but i soon realised that it wasent because that jason sucked, it was just that they turned him down so much you could barely hear the basslines.

Ive been watching some live videos and the bass is really good and clear

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LHft...ne%20metallica

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=trRA1...ch=fuel%20live

loads of good quality live recording have jason turn up absloutly loads so you can actually hear what hes playing, rather than just feel it.

so why on earth didnt they do it on the album?

So far, with both of your posts, you've knocked bassists.

I predict you will go far on this website with your obvious vast sea of knowledge and interpersonal skills.

meh, they inspire new bass players, but thats about it.
there are better shredders than cliff, and i dont really kno what jasons good at, besides stupid power chord bass solos.

As unpopular as this may be, I actually agree with you about Cliff's tone.

Very far. I'm holding out any more comment until the guy gets his own appreciation thread for posting his superior opinions.

I never said I liked either of them. Allow me to explain. You see, this is a thread sympathetic towards Jason Newstead. This is obvious from the first post. It could then be reasoned that the thread starter is looking to discuss Newstead with other fans of the guy and his plight in a particular band at a particular point in his career...specifically how he sits in the mix from album to album.

He did not ask people what they thought of his playing or Burton's (notice the apostrophe). There are plenty of threads on this forum that argue the finer points of Metallica's (there's that pesky apostrophe, again) past and present bassists. Sure, you are entitled to your opinion, and you are physically able to post it anywhere on this forum you choose BUT: If I were going to knock a bassist's skill in a thread favoring said bassist and not discussing his perceived skill, I'd probably look for a better way to word it (or better yet, a better place to word it). But, hey, you're picky about bassists, so go ahead and drop "I hate (fill in the blank)" in as many threads as you can. It's very constructive and speaks volumes.

Mike

firstly, if i could be stuffed with proper grammar, i would be using it. im simply pointing out that just because jasons( note the lack of apostraphe) loud live doesnt mean hes good. and hopefully a lightbulb might click in some peoples like so "hm, maybe modelling myself on this boring bassist will achieve nothing, lets go further" and then we have a world of good bassists.

Wow. You totally didn't get my point. I guess we're done here.

Don't attempt to argue, he's as slayer fan.

I never really like Jason up until a few years ago, then I began to really love his tight playing. He likes to improvise a lot, but he has some great chops.

Another 15 year old "I hate Metallica" boy,or whatever, leave it Mike!

Well about Jason,I think he sits in the mix quite good except Justice of course.I listened to Reload lately and the bass is....uhmm really "bassy" you know

Oh another thing is I wonder which tone of Cliff's you don't like,in the albums or just the distortion solos ?(You don't need to answer this AngelofDeath)
