I've had this live version bookmarked for some time, as I liked this performance.

I also dig the red-haired backup singer; she has "talent".

I thought it was Chuck Rainey.

"The drum track was played by Bernard "Pretty" Purdie whose long-time session partner, Chuck Rainey, plays the bass." [per Wiki]

oh, read too quick - I see you're referring to the live. I think that is Freddy Washington.

Ok; I thought it might be Tom Barney -- who I used to see on that great old live music TV show from the early 90's "Night Music". I know he's a short guy, so that's why I assumed it was him.

What a terrific and joyful performance, eh? And good sound!

assuming it's the 2006 tour - here is a cut from the press release:

"Concertgoers can expect a hefty draft of the inimitable Steely Dan sonic experience this summer. Supported by a crack 10-piece band — including Keith Carlock on drums, Freddie Washington on bass, and Jon Herington on guitar"

Better yet, what's he playing? Love the tone.... but is it a Fender, or boutique copy?

I believe it's Tom Barney. The clip looks like early 00's.

See, that's another thing that points to Tom Barney for me -- it sounds and looks like his custom E.S.P. jazz. Love that tone -- the mids haven't all been scooped out.

I googled pics of both Freddie Washington and Tom Barney. The bassist looks a lot more like Freddie then Tom to me.

Me too, and I came to the opposite conclusion. Another clue is that it's pretty much been Keith Carlock and Freddie since '03, and that sure ain't Keith on drums.

It was Tom Barney off the "Two Against Nature" storytellers dvd special. Tom plays mostly ESP, Music Man although he just picked up the Carvin SB series bass and he's been known to play Alleva Copella too. I meet him at NAMM, great guy for the record.

Quote:
In January of 2000, Donald and Walter began the promotional process for "Two Against Nature" by recording two shows at the Sony Studios in New York. They performed several of the songs from the new CD as well as some older favorites, and they never sounded better. They introduced their new band -- Lawson, Barney, Herington, Baker, Leonhart and Leonhart, Calhoun, Victoria Cave, Potter (who unfortunately could not tour later in '00 and was replaced by Bob Shepard), Bumpus, and Jim Pugh on (yes) trombone. The DVD from these shows is the finest recorded live music from Steely Dan. They also taped an episode of VH1's "Storytellers" where Donald and Walter took questions from the audience, and they performed "Cousin Dupree" on a "Late Show" appearance with David Letterman.

I don't know. The video lists Larry Carlton who's not listed on the above list.

I don't know why it matters a damn, but I love little mysteries like this!

Tom and Freddie are both absolutely terrific players. I can't definitively visually I.D. this one, but it sounds like Tom Barney to me (even if he had dreads for some part of this last decade).
