Stefan Lessard back to playing Warwick

Sign in to disble this ad

After a 10 year hiatus, he brings the Warwick Dolphin back. The bass he used on Before These Crowded Streets, Crash, and Under The Table and Dreaming.

I have GOT to get me one of these. Holy crap.

Check out their newest tune 'The Idea of You' and listen to his tone:

Yep, I saw this the other day and was quite happy about it (I have a '91 boire Dolphin myself). I talked with him before a show last year and at the time he was still a bit down on Warwick, but he also said he was starting to get back into the 'wood' sound after doing the Mod graphite thing for several years. It's nice to see the Dolphin back out on the road!

I love some Dave Matthews, and love some of his basslines, but his solos are often quite questionable, I find.

I used to rip off his stuff alot though.....

Fonz has been seen playing several non-moduli as of late (Ken Smith 6, Dolphin 4, Fender P bass with flats, etc)

Wonder how this will go over since he has an endorsement deal with Modulus....

regardless, gotta go with whatever gets the sound you want...glad to see he is no slave to the system like that...

I only wish he could find a good mixture between the two (Modulus and Warwick) as both have their strengths and weaknesses.

he smartened up
honestly, I prefer the Warwick tone over the Modulus. More 'organic'.

The Smith 6 and the Fender P were around last year... not sure if he's even playing his Mods this tour seeing as the Dolphin appears to be the 4-string of choice now. I'm just happy that he busted it back out.

He typically solos before Watchtower and Grace is Gone, and I agree, it's not necessarily his strong point.

What happened with Warwick before that he stopped using them? Did he just go for a change of pace?

I think that was closer to it. He said that the Modulus people were really cool and gave him some basses to try and he really liked them, whereas the Warwick folk were not necessarily as accomodating. I think he also said he was pretty happy with how well the Mod necks weren't affected by the climate changes during the tour.

ive seen him do some cool solo stuff before watchtower peformances...mostly when he does melodic stuff with a slide and effects. when he tries ot get percussive and slaps and such it just dosnt come off as nciely....this might be due to his foundation as a pure upright player, his attack when soloing makes me think this way....who knows...he sure can groove though!
also...+1 on the warwick tone....i loved the tone he used ot get with the thumb 6 and dolphin 4....so growly and organic...the mods dont match the dave style as much imo

He mainly solos at live shows. I don't think I've ever heard him take a solo spot in a song, but he opens Watchtower alot. It's sometimes better than others, but he'll do some crazy **** that doesn't always work so hot.

yeah his solos have always annoyed me live. (29 shows now, yikes)
To me, he is most impressive in his low notes and how smooth and connected his bass lines can be. His low b is the shizzle!!
he uses the dolphin for that growly warwick sound in exactly the right songs, like stay or what would you say, and the smooth tight lows of the modulus in most other songs.

i still think his best live tone came from the modulus/dolphin basses into the swr grand prix's/crest amps/meyers sound cabs.

i saw them 2 weeks ago in saratoga springs ny and he used a ken smith 6 string for a lot of the set, the dolphin and modulus 5 came out a bit as well. sounded good, the smith was a bit muddy at times, not as clear and growly and distinguishable in the mix as the warwick tone, more liek the modulus.

Warning!!!
Bubinga is HEAVY. Holy crap! My left arm would go numb after about 30 minutes. I switched to Prolines.

Also, Play any warwick before you buy. The consistancy varies somewhat. No two warwick necks feel the same to me.

Anyone see the hollow body flamed maple infinity in Bass Player Mag this month. It's in a full page add for staps or something. OUCH

My all time favorite Stefan tone is the tone he gets on listener supported. It sounds like the dolphin: very growly, with a lot of midrange punch.
