I just watched some clips of Jeff BEck from 1974 and he is backed by the band Upp . The bassist is Stephen Amazing and he is (as his name says) pretty amazing . He nice a cool solo in the first clip. He plays with a pick but it almost seems as if he's playing a guitar the way he strums. Anyone know anything about this guy . There is really nothing on the net about him it seems.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG4Lu...elated&search=

Wow this one took me back! I grew up in S E London and remember seeing Upp a few times. They'd just formed I think and were playing in a small hall in Welling, Kent across the road from Alan Billington music shop which house a couple of sunburst Fender basses. I remember 'cos I used to cross the road after the gig and press the nose against the shop window. That would have been about 1970-72 I guess.

Rumours were around that the keyboardist (Andy Clark) was playing with Jeff Beck but this is the first I've seen of the band playing with him. JB used to live in Kent and occasionally turn up at a remote country pub near Canterbury for a gig (another rumour of the time).

Don't know if that's Andy in the video as he was sinister looking with very long hair and the leader of the band. Copley on drums and Amazing on bass is what I remember.

Supposedly, one day they were playing and Andy said to Steve 'Amazing Steve, amazing' - and that was that. The kind of crazy thing they'd do at that time (remember Arthur Brown?).

Steve was an early influence of mine, as was Phil from 'Fat Daughter' who roadied for the Jackson 5 in the UK and I never heard of again. Same with Steve until now.

Thanks for the memories.

PS. Upp - they pronouced it up and not U-P-P btw

Andi Clark cowrote the Wilbur Bascomb showcase 'Head For The Backstage Pass' off the Wired album. I think Beck asked UPP to open the US Wired tour and Stephen Amazing had a mental breakdown. Very sad, those youtube videos are great!
