I've seen some DIY stuff like this. I think Carl Martin does it to. It's a fun idea but not very practical. I think Devi hit the nail on the head with the cartridge system. Did that ever get going?

cartridge idea works for a lot of people but not so well for Dunwich. Where you gunna fit those turrets? I think thats still being developed but it is funded.

Sounds like a cool ideas to me Nick, but probably impractical. Only in the sense that it would be hard to make one version multiple people would want. Depending on what effects combos people like. OD/Dist and Fuzz are kind of a no-brainer, then I would say either delay or reverb and then either boost or compressor. If you could make a modular PCB based platform it might be slightly more practical in execution. Then you could have a base price for the board and a menu for the desired effects. Even then, not sure if it would be worth the trouble for a commercial venture...but it would definitely be cool and interesting. I love experimenting with effects order, blending and all that stuff, personally.

Reminds me of the 70s and 80s when the big touring guys would disguise their pedalboard inside some big custom metal enclosure, with label maker style labels like "FUZZ", "DELAY", "CHORUS", etc., usually vintage production pedals modded up to their favorite specs, with midi switching systems. I remember Andy Summers had one, I think David Gilmour had one too at some point.

yea most likely (like most of my stuff) would be a full custom thing. Each customer would have to specify what they wanted. So it could be any combo of maybe 4. Like Wizard Fuzz, Deep Space, Volt Thrower, and Phantom Echoes (what i wanted to call my delay)

I think one or two dunwich effects in a single rack space with a foot switch would be cool.

yea could also be done as well. Rack mount with internal power supply, and remote switching.

Neil Young still does this. He's got a giant red homemade pedal board for his effects and amp switching.

Nick...just hold onto the bass preamp, combine it with this analog multi-fx idea, with a Wizard Fuzz, Volt Thrower, Phantom Echoes, a compressor and a germanium boost...then rehouse it in a VW Bus and I'll get a PA system built in.

TOUR VAN BASS RIG OF DOOOOOOOOM.

Listening to Space Mushroom Fuzz and really digging it. Sounds like early Ween mixed with Wooden Shjips. http://spacemushroomfuzz.bandcamp.com/

It took me about 5 or 6 amps to find one that worked for me again.

If I had to do it all over again I would have gotten a Walkabout.

I guess what I'm saying is, is that a tube amp sounds awesome until you realize it won't work for your needs.

To be honest...I'm pretty sure I lost my point.
Nice! Thanks for that.

You should be able to nab one under your budget. I haven't tried one yet, but just throwing out some other options.
I had forgotten about those, I'll take a look around and see if I can test one out.

Noted, I had a friend who had one, sounded good but was never loud enough...but I have never played a tube amp that I thought was loud enough so, I'm kind of expecting that.

Had a 400ps, heavy as all hell, not worth the hassle it gave me. The Sunn 2000s is a sweet amp, one of the dudes in cstvt has one, I should try his out.

You can also get them for around 5-600$ used in great condition. Another plus is they double as amazing guitar amps.
These are all things I like to hear, make me want to try one out more now...

I completely get what you're saying. I kind of want a tube amp just to have a tube amp again. I always find tube amps to be underpowered for the situations when I use them (outside of recording, in which case they're pretty sweet). But if I were going to use a tube amp live, it would be a much lower volume project (which isn't in the works at all currently) or in conjuntion with my Sunn as a ghetto rigged bi-amp system with the Sunn/Berg's covering the lows and probably some highs, and the Tube amp and that Hiwatt 4x12 filling in the harmonics and midrange growl and general tube magic.

Thanks for the suggestions, others are always appreciated too.

I also have a VB-2. Although I haven't been able to play it cranked up through my 8x10 without messed up speakers in a long time, I forgot what it sounds like. haha.
When I had it paired with 2 Peavey 2x15s, with FZ-2 boost on the Not so great OD channel on the amp... It crushed.

I can't think of many other 200 waters other then stuff out of your price range. I.E. Reeves, Marshall, Hiwatt, Morgan, divided by 13etc. Maybe a old sound city???? One with passive tone controls. Simms watts, univox???? Can you tell I scoured for a 200w amp . The peavey is cool for the money.

It's a lil rough, but great if you planned on touring and wanted a wicked bass. Unsure how i feel about the badass bridge though...
