Steuart Liebig Appreciation Thread

Anyone here a fan of Steuart Liebig's unique bass artistry?

Well, he doesn't stop at just playing bass, he is trulya complete musician (composes, arranges as well) and has done many things ranging from funk/R&B to modern classical and avante garde jazz and beyond.

My first 2 exposures to his varied musicality came in the form of BLOC (which also included Nels Cline), a twisted/quirky funk-rock band, and also on Wayne Peet's Doppler Funk - BLASTO, a unique take on funk/fusion injected with a dose of Stravinsky (circa 1987). Steuart's done NUMEROUS recordings in many contexts both as leader and sideman.

Any fans?

I used to go see Bloc a bunch and he/they always sounded great.
There was a tune he started, I think called "dying fires", that's beautiful.
I'll have to check some of the other stuff.

Oh yeah, "Dying Fires", very beautifully heart-wrenching song. They wound up getting signed to A&M, put out one album in 1990 and then broke up after the label dumped them.

man, I'm so glad to see a thread about this cat!

Steaurt's been a friend of mine (and I've been a hardcore fan) since the late 80's. I first heard him back in '88 and the way I think of music has never been the same since.

aside from being tremendously underrated as a player, he's a tremendous composer and arranger.

he recently celebrated his 50th birthday with a wild concert in L.A. and the list of guest performers was just staggering!

more power to Stig!!

I've seen him several times, and used to work with him(business, not musically). A compliment I would alway him: "you have to know the rules to break them..." and he did both

Tee-Tot Quartet - Always Outnumbered

Just got this from CD Baby, one of the most unique simultaneously forward thinking and backward looking musical aggregations I've heard in a grizzly's age. Steuart Liebig put together this little project called the Tee Tot Quartet with himself, Joe Berardi (ex Fibonaccis, Motor Totemist Guild) on drums, Dan Clucas on cornet and Scott Ray on electric dobro with effects. The sound, something like olt-timey jazz/blues and country filtered through the lens of Ornettte Coleman, Mingus and the LA improv avant scene. There's lots of humor and depth to this music, check out the samples on the CD Baby page:
http://cdbaby.com/cd/slttq

Always Outnumbered is their first disc. They don't get to play live very often, simply due to the fact that 3/4 of the band lives in LA while Scott Ray lives in Montana

I was introduced to Stig by another excellent bassist in the "avant-jazz" genre, Jeff Song, and we've remained dilligent if infrequent correspondents, trading CDs over the years. He's a killer bassist but I *really* dig his compositional vision. I especially love his CD Pienso Oculto (with Quartetto Stig). Locustland and Bone Structure are two other very satisfying discs.
