Steve Bailey on Tab Benoit's "What I Live For"

Just re-discovering this great disc and noticed for the first time that Steve Bailey is the bassist. I don't normally think of Steve as a blues guy, but this is a wonderful example imo of bringing a "modern" approach to the genre and making it work. His tone here is modern too; big round and clear, tight bottom and a touch of low-mid burp. The recording is from 1994 which predates Steve's association with Aria; any idea what he was playing back then?

This is the only Youtube clip I could find. There are some even more interesting bass performances on the record, but this will give you an idea. It's a little busy and adventurous, but so solid and musical.

I'm sure Bass Extremes Live was 1994, when he was playing an Aria. All the same, that does not sound like his Aria at all and I could not say what it is.

Steve Bailey was also on Tab's "Nice And Warm" release, from 1991 or so IIRC. Gregg Bissonnette was on drums on that record, which is equally surprising. It's a great blues album, although I can see where some may find it a little sterile.

Steve can verify this but I think he said a while back it was an old P-Bass..like maybe a 57 or 58......that prolly wasn't on every track.....ask him!

My band used to cover "You crossed the line", what a great tune. People used to hear us do it and request more Tab, most notably "Cherry Tree". Tab's a great talent, has an incredible love of music, and is an all-around nice guy. Go see him if he's in your area.

Sounds great, thanks for sharing.
I've been listening to Joe Bonamassa with Eric Czar on bass.
He really nails it with a modern approach.

Yeah, "Cherry Tree" is a killer track; I was hoping to find some Youtube to post for it, but no...

That's actually one of my favorite bass performances on the record; just magic.
