Steve Bailey V Victor Wooten

Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey - Stan the Man - YouTube

Folks make a big deal about Victor Wooten, and yes he is godly. However, I rarely see anything said about Steve Bailey, and I've watched this a bunch of times. I think Bailey is a bit more subtle, but clearly outplays Wooten.

Can my man Steve get some love?

Why people look at music as a competition is beyond me, They both are great players..... They are both playing something totally different and it's for the song and not to be outplayed by the other.....

Not really looking at it as a competition per se. I am just saying that what I saw in this video was Steve Bailey playing much more tastefully and cool, but while there are a ton of Wooten fans out there, Bailey is much less well known.

Rather than a versus thread, I should have made it a bit more clear that I'm looking more for a comparative discussion of the two bassists and whats on display here.

I saw these two at the JEN conference in Louisville this year. What it really amounted to was two guys on stage going "Hey, look at me do this thing everyone's seen me do on youtube."

Then the Jazz Ambassadors hit the stage and played one of most musical big band sets I've seen in my limited days of music listening. It was one of those, "yes, this is what it's all about" moments. It kind of made me feel sorry for Vic and Steve, because I know they're both capable of doing way more than the kind of silly dick-waving that bass extremes did that night. Also, Sherrie Miracle and Five Play was fantastic.

That is something else I noticed in this vid. It does look to me like they are attempting to outplay each other. Also Ive seen some other clips from the set, and I have never really seen Wooten act like that before. He seems like he's mad at Steve like the chemistry is a little off.
