Steve Harris with ampeg

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi all,
Being a huge Steve Harris fan I like to think I know a fair bit about him (gear, technique, etc). But I've been reading in a couple of places that he has replaced his Trace Elliot (back up preamp) with an Ampeg. I've never seen this in his rig. Anyone have any insight or clarity on this matter?
Thanks,
Louis.

He uses a trace elliot and marshall rig if I remember correctly.

Excactly, from my understanding he used that from X-Factor until Dance of Death, and then went back to his electron hiwatt copy as his main (still using the Trace as a back up).

Holy Crap, could someone please interview Steve Harris. His 3 fingers and rig are always such a mystery. I should ask his daughter!

I believe he uses 2 fingers. Don't know about his rig though.......others know about this way more than me.

He uses only 2 fingers. There's a Youtube video of an interview where Steve himself said so.

I found an interview a while ago where he clarifies his rig. He uses the Electron Pre Amp that copies the old Hiwatt he used back in the day. Then he uses an old DBX 160A compressor and has a power amp(unknown) power the signal to 4 4x12 Marshall Cabs with Electro Voice speakers.

He was quoted as saying the closest "actual amp" he as found soundwise to what he uses is an Ampeg SVT. That may be where the confusion of him switching to Ampeg came from.

As for his fingers I've heard him and Nicko both say he only uses 2 fingers. I will avoid the obvious joke about his daugher being mentioned while questioning finger technique.

You don't need 3 fingers to play those parts. Really, 3 fingers is not the best technique - IMO. I have never needed more than 2 well placed and practiced fingers.

I don't know about his rig. He sounds great. You are hearing the PA anyway.

...which is no doubt run to sound like his rig. can't imagine a soundman lasting long with them who doesn't.

I agree, but it takes some serious practice to play like him. We did a cover show for Halloween where we did The Trooper, Wasted Years, Rime of the Ancient Mariner and then Run to the Hills. Rime is basically a 14 minute bass wank with a kickass song written around it...and after that I had to play Run to the Hills! My hand was hamburger after that show! It is doable but takes some serious practice...I only resorted to the 3 fingers during Run to the Hills because I was dead at that point.

^^ Put some more planning into your setlist!

When I put together a Maiden songlist to burn on a CD (to play along with), I took that type of thing into consideration. (I also use two fingers only.)
After Rime, I went with a slower song (Benjamin Breeg), before going back into something faster (Evil That Men Do). Did a similar thing with Run to the Hills, put the relatively easy Flight of Icarus after it, helping my right hand recover.

Up the Irons!

I'm a bassist...you think I have any say? You should see the crowd once you finish Mariner and the drums for Hills comes on...epic!

He doesn't play as hard as it looks. His technique is from that dying breed of players that used amplification in its classic sense.

Try to play "Caught Somewhere in Time" with 2 fingers!

Guys, this thread is about his gear and not his technique.
