Steve Harris Owns the Stage

I saw Iron Maiden last night - June 9. In a word - spectacular! Yes I am a huge Maiden/Harris fan but last night's show blew me away. The show the band brings is huge and worth every cent of the ticket price. Steve Harris just owns the stage! The control and precision of his galloping style is a treat to watch. His sound was thunderous and came through exactly like the albums. The MTS Centre was sold out (12,500) so the atmosphere was also over the top. Truly a treat to watch and a great night!

Agreed! Steve Harris is certainly one of my faves. I have seen Iron Maiden numerous times, and they always bring one helluva show.

I saw the show in Vancouver. . . and I was disappointed.

My first Maiden show and I was stoked, the props and stage effects were great but the sound let me down.

The stadium they played at here doesn't have the best sound and some songs sounded great but most were just a loud puddle of mudd which were not enjoyable at all to listen to.
They also don't play as tight live as I had hoped, atleast not at this show.

Don't get me wrong it was a great experience and Harris plays like a madman. But it just wasn't what I was expecting. Maybe I am being too harsh as I saw RUSH from the 2nd row just a week earlier .

Not only does he own the stage...
He is...

"the leader and sole owner of the band."

All I can do is echo your statements. It really was a treat and I was thoroughly stoked watching Steve play. Amazing!

I've been waiting a long, long time to see them play.

At 19, I'm fairly proud of having seen them 12 times at various concerts and festivals (yes, multiple times on each tour) and I've never been disappointed. One of the most entertaining live bands out there.

I was also at the Winnipeg show, making it my first Maiden concert!
I just got a pair of musicians' earplugs so I got to try them out for the first time. Boy did they sound great. There were some things that could have slightly been improved, but on the whole this was an excellent concert, I couldn't have asked for better. It's great to see a metal band do a show this professionally, most of the time the sound just sucks terribly.

Interesting note: In the interlude halfway through Rime of the Ancient Mariner Steve Harris plays augmented chords. Live they sounded a little muddy, but I guess that's what you'd expect.

steve harris pretty much rules the old school metal scene as far as bass players go. can't think of anyone who can touch his bad-assness

yeah I love steve harris' bass playing style. I grew up listening to all the maiden albums and played in numerous bands that played maiden songs and his style was tough to play. Yeah he plays that galloping style..like a horse trotting...but it works so well with the music. Dude's gotta be 55 by now..eh?

He rocks!!

I've seen Maiden a couple of times in the mid and late 80's(once up real close) and he is in my top 3 bass players. He cuts through the mix brilliantly. He wrote most of the music around his bass lines. I need to get out and see them again before it's too late.

He played the white one and then the blue one during the encore.

The last time I saw Maiden in Cleveland, it was an outside show, it was hot, and the crowd was getting pretty obnoxious. One group, in particular, were getting a bit out of hand. Well, about 2/3 of the way through the show, Steve was out front, foot on the monitor, giving his energy out to the crowd, and this frackin' idiot throws a full cup of beer (and I am talking Big Gulp sized) at Steve, soaking him and his bass (I think it was the white one). I swear to God, I thought Steve was going to jump out into the crowd and rip the guy's throat out with his bare hands! He was as pissed as I have seen a man get, and Bruce had to physically restrain him. He kinda threw the bass down (and someone grabbed it before it hit, I think it was Bruce, again, who was really on top of things and trying to control the situation), and then charged towards the stage. After a bit, he stormed off, and I thought that this was the end of the show.

After some time of awkward silence - and near rioting in the crowd - Bruce suggests to the audience that 'the next time a guy brings his arm back with the intention of hurling a beer at the stage, you ought to make sure that he is not able to complete the motion.' The crowd goes nuts, and after some improve drum and guitar work, Steve comes back out. Still pissed. It probably took him a song and a half to get back into the groove, but once he did, he did so with even more vigor and gusto.

I am still disappointed and saddened that such idiotic behavior was exhibited at a show in my home state, but it certainly made for a memorable experience. Dickinson was amazing, and I'll never forget how well he handled that situation.

Tom.
