Just saw the "Certifiable" DVD Reunion thing a few years back, and I noticed that Sting, who plays relatively simple lines in Police songs, ripped it up during a few tracks....
especially during "when the world is running down"
Maybe during 20 years of being a jazz/smooth rock musician he ripped off some Darryl Jones, etc licks.
Anyone who doubts Stings ability to jam should find a clip of this performance. (sorry don't have time right now to dig on Youtube for it---just wanted to post while fresh in mind) |

His re-arrangement on the bass parts for those songs was absolutely incredible. Now I have two sets of Police songs to learn instead of just one!

Anyone thinking he's not a great musician is a fool. |

A lot of times the vocals and bass are doing completely different things and doing both can be a lot harder than it sounds, for me anyway.

As someone else above noted, being a bassist is more about what you don't play than what you do in developing a line to fit the song. Andy Summers took up a lot of the unfilled sonic space in the Police, and when you have a drummer as active as Copeland, too much bass would be Clash of the Titans time.

| | | | I believe Sting played jazz before forming the Police. A fellow musician once told me that he read an interview with Sting wherein Sting proudly admitted that the Police's punk/new wave/reggae mixture was shrewdly and coldly calculated in order to vie for attention and seek fame.
He's a wonderful bass player. His brilliant use of a pick on "Spirits in the Material World" led me to start using one again, after switching from pick to fingers when I was first learning.

| | | | Sting is an absolute favorite of mine. His sense of groove, fun basslines, and great timing are inspiring.
Spirits in a Material World
Driven to Tears
Man in a Suitcase
(the pickup note coming out of the solo in) Bring on the Night
Miss Gradenko
Can't Stand Losing You
Funny enough last time I saw them it was like watching a musical fistfight between him and Copeland. Sting lays back and Copeland wants to speed up the WHOLE TIME!!!

I love jamming on the bass lines from "Peanuts" (Outlandos D'Amour), and "On Any Other Day" (Regatta De Blanc). |
