Hey Bass Brothers,

Just wanted to see if anybody else thought Robert DeLeo's bass lines on their major hits were THE SHIZ! Catchy, made the song, really melodic. Particularly Dead and Bloated, Plush, and Interstate Love Song. GO ROBERT DELEO!

i agree man. the song they did for the crow soundtrack had a great line as well. those were good days for basslines in popular music.

My band's covered all of those that were mentioned...

Hardest part: getting the drummer to match the weird-@55ed beats, so that the bassist can lock in.

I love their stuff!!

I love Robert DeLeo. I saw STP live in October, and they were fantastic.

Eric, the drummer, seems to play really behind the beat, so it is difficult to find drummers who can do that well.

DeLeo was great. Big Jamerson influence to his lines.

That is an excellent description of Eric Kretz: he is the kind of drummer that makes certain rock music unique: he is rock solid but is just off beat enough to give the other guys in the band different spaces to play in, and different ideas to play with. DeLeo is killer- but Kretz and Rob's brother are the unsung heroes in STP imo

I had never noticed how strange his beats were, 'til we started learning those songs and our drummer started complaining about it . He managed to copy them pretty well... then it became my burden to try to lock in. DeLeo was great at playing to every bass drum hit, even when they fell in the weirdest places, LOL. Now, I cringe everytime I hear another band start Interstate Love Song, and totally blow the intro.

Didn't know that, but it sure makes sense.

I've read a couple interviews with Robert where he talks about his bass lines having a huge influence from Jamerson. He calls himself just a Jamerson rip off artist.

I love STP I saw them in Ohio a few years ago, it was their first show back after the hiatus! (aside from the secret gig in LA..... but i'm not counting that :-))

Yea, I have always thought of Rob DeLeo as a great player. Back in the nineties when I first heard STP it was his bass tone and riffs that caught my ear and kind of hooked me in on STP's music.

Thumbs up

Totally agree about Kretz. He comes off simplistic because he plays so heavy (see Grohl) until you try and reproduce the drum parts. Then you start to realize how essential he is to the equation. Best match for Roberts lines hands down. I always found Roberts lines an excellent blend of busy but tasteful and of course extremely melodic and yet just the right sense of space. One reason they were such a huge sound with only one (helluva) guitar player.
There's a pretty amazing Rockumentary (remember those?) floating around out there. A lot of great behind the scenes footage of the recording of Tiny Music and such...

Thanks for bringing this up!

the bass line from Sour Girl is nothing short of perfect for that song, Robert is one of my major influences. Love his live show too !!

Now, if only we could all form bands w/ innovative drummers, fantastic guitarists, damn good vocalists, that can right 20+ songs a day that allow the bass to be heard....

....oh, and I'd have to work on my chops, A LOT!!!

(this is NOT a complaint about my current bands )

Yes, I agree, those are my favorite bass lines to play.

Always gets me some thumbs up and is usually a nice reward in an ocean of root 8.

I admire his clever use of chromatics. I really really love chromatics and I sneak it in whenever I can do it and still sound cool.

Man I love all Robertīs lines so much, they are incredible. To me he is the best ROCK bass player from the last 20 years, I dare you to name a better solid rock player (chancellor, claypool or flea are not exactly rock). Even a song that bores me to death right now like Plush has an incredible line and tone with the flatwound strings and ampeg amp as he always uses: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZouvJPA2ng
