I dont think I'm going to be going to full tube quite yet, I know I'll eventually end up there, I gotta get my M6 first!

Right now, all I have is my normal run of the mill, BIG, Big Muff. I love it. I want one of each of the Muffs, or at least the Black and Green Russian Muffs.

man, i had to do a lot of reading to catch up!

Re: HOF- I'm not sure what Jeff Matz does in the studio, but live he usually runs a guitar rig w/ his bass rig. i like his tone on the new one, but i still prefer the band's older songs. they may be "maturing," but i don't have to like it.

Re: Knobs- i don't like'em. for years, I dreamed of an svt 300. i'd have a pre amp w/ volume, bass, mids, and highs, and a power amp w/ level and presence. that said, i am honestly really happy w/ my peavey classic 120/120. one more knob than the svt 300, and the option to run half power. I like using pedals and technique to color tone.

I have to admit I like the Sinead O'Conner cover of that song almost as much as The Animals' version (though the latter certainly is, in my mind, the definitive one).

Even though I have no money, I'm curious about the new bass heads Mesa is apparently coming out with. Front end kinda like the M9, with a tube power section.

Though I should really just keep saving for my eventual self-built project (once I know enough to actually attempt such).

I bet it be a really clear tube head. Oh and I have a dumb question, what is the purpose of a compressor? I have never even read about compressors in 12 years and I know lots of guys use them

there is a soundcloud link in my sig to a few songs we recorded at rehearsal this weekend.

We are proud of all of them, but i'm particularly psyched for The Last Stand of Imam Hussain. We finished writing it this weekend, and that's the first time we ever pled it tips to tails.

From the minimal use/experience I've had with'em, they seem to make it so loud jumps in volume/frequencies don't "jump out". Like playing a few notes are fine in a mix, then move to another string, or moving elsewhere on the neck, and it seems "louder".

They basically even out your dynamics so that if you hit a note to hard you dont spike it..or on low notes overwhelm the speakers...they do this by limiting the extremes of a sound wave, they dont cut it off but instead "compress" that wave and elongated it. This fattens the sound some, gives you more sustain generally and effectively raises the lower volume notes by giving em more body...all in all making your sound Fuller and your technique seem more consistent.

i wouldnt use one for the doom thing. ive used them when i do my victor wooten tapping/slapping **** because when you hit notes softer and quicker, they are sometimes quieter and can get lost in a mix or even by yourself. the compressor will bring those notes up in level even tho hit softer. i had a dbx 166 or something when i was in psyopus that really helped with the tapping that sometimes got lost but when i started playing slow huge heavy stuff i got rid of my whole rack.

My amp has a decent compressor, I have it set to subtly keep my string volume consistent. I don't think I'd ever intentionaly buy a comp pedal as I've never had a problem with my dynamics on a 4 string pbass.

Nice tracks thombo... Needs more bass in the mix!

I like it. You need a dude to make crazy space ship noises and samples

Doug, meet everyone...everyone, meet Doug

Its not spectacular figuring but wasn't expecting the mona lisa of wood grain.

Overall for $126 shipped to me it's amazing. It has really cheap strings though, will be changing those out soon. Have to wait til tomorrow's practice to hear it plugged in. will report more then.

Also, thinking about my next rig, M6 with dual 2x12's or Fearful 1212/6/1?

Jam went okayish. I was a bit slow picking up some riffs, but once I was able to work out some roots I was able to hang a bit. They're having another dude over to jam, but did invite me back for another night next week already.

Some pretty cool riffs, albeit somewhat faster than I was expecting. I think I could write some interesting, big, and slow lines that sit underneath what they're doing to make it pretty heavy.

I'm also not completely sold on the idea of practicing 3 nights a week (2 hour practices). It's more than I've done with any other band, and while I'm fine with it while writing and getting a set tight, I don't think I can sustain that forever. I was upfront about it, and I think we're almost on the same page (at least, the drummer was). Going to have to chat with the wife about it and figure out what kind of commitment I'm really willing to make. It looks like these guys might be shooting a little higher than my hoped for 1 or 2 nights a week practice and 2 or 3 gigs a month.

3 times a week is too much for me. I think it would ruin the kind of vibe we always get practicing once a week since we're writing.
